Wow, Belcrest gets a bad rap on here

I haven't moved out of the Belcrest yet, so I don't know about the security deposit yet, but I'm pretty fond of the place.

One, Michael the landlord seems to get a bad rap on here. He comes off as kind of brash sometimes, but he's BY FAR the best landlord I've ever had (and I've had to deal with quite a few of them). He lives in the building and if you give him maintenance requests on paper, he responds within 48 hours. I can imagine he can be unpleasant if you don't pay your rent on time, but I've never been there.

Two, Detroit gets a rap for being a dangerous town. The Belcrest has a little security (mostly the keycard at the door) but the big advantage is that the Belcrest is in one of the safest parts of town with TONS of police presense on the north part of Cass. I've never had any problems. The only downside to living in Detroit is that, you're in the middle of everything but nearby nothing. You have to drive 20 miles just to go shopping at a target or meijer. Fortunately, Eastern Market is about a mile away and provides cheaper and fresher foods. The hours suck though.

Three, the tenants of the building are kind of weird, but most people there are really nice and fairly quiet. I've never had any problems with neighbors or other tenants. The buiding is mostly WSU students, young professionals, ethnic (indian and asian) families and older people.

Parking has never been a problem really. I have a pass for the lot, so it's easy in and out. We have two cars in my apartment one of us parks in the lot and the other in the street. We've never had any problems unless there was a big event going on at WSU that would clog up Cass.

The apartment is HUGE and the view is spectacular. Laundry is on the second floor -- never had a problem with it except you gotta pay. City taxes and insurance relining, but electricity is cheap. There's a bar next door (the circa) and WSU, the historical museum, the DIA, and the DPL main branch are all within 5 minutes walking distance.
