Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006
I have lived a year in Cathedral Tower and boy am I happy that I am out. I do not even know where to start and the negatives are HUGE so let me start with the positives since that is a shorter list
1. Security is pretty good and since security is a big thing in Detroit.
2. Hell I don't know a 2nd.
Negatives
1. BUGS. The entire building is crawling with cockroaches and to keep everyone happy they have been joined by bedbugs. This is sooo gross and the management is no help either. They are spraying for bugs every 3 months but it is absolutely no use. Still everything is full of cockroaches. When I complained to the management they told me that this is no problem and to be expected. Looked at me as if I were from mars. If you have an infested apartment you are on your own and since bugs are spreading even an uninfested apartment becomes infested. Speaking of warranty of habitability
2. maintenance: I had once a problem that water was gushing through the ceiling. It was a weekend and I called the emergency number. I called that number about 4 times and waited for 5 hours. The maintenance guy was either extremely drunk or under the influence of drugs when he came. I could not even make him understand what the problem was.
3. water: once a month they turn off the water with one day notice. Completely erratic.
4. elevator: More often than not one is broken. Which is really funny in a building with 18 levels and what 14 apartments per level.
5. costs: 450 bucks per month 80$ for parking. For that much money you can get a really nice apartment in Royal Oak.
6. parking: as I said 80$ per month BUT the management is so dumb that they are sometimes assigning your spot also to someone else. I had my spot for 3 weeks when I came back from some place and found someone standing in my place. Management did not note, that they had given the space away. Also there are constantly people parking illegally in the spots and you have to take care of the towing and stuff. Nightmare.
7. The apartments are small, that is ok but the kitchen is extremely small. There is almost no space.
8. The windows are probably just for decoration in the walls. It does not matter if the windows are open or not. There is always a draft. Extremely nice for michigan winters. Oh and by the way the air conditioning works almost not at all. Makes a lot of noise but does not cool.
9. Always trouble with heating
10. Management changes every 4 months, as far as I could tell, so can't help you of course because new. In a year they were not able to register my name in the system for the door. Oh and it is a total nightmare if you want to break the lease.
Well that is all I can think of for the moment but there are probably another dozen things.
Summary: If you are an entomologist and like to be screwed, MOVE IN
