I had intended to take over a lease this June for a graduate student at Wayne State University. Being that I had only dealt with the manager (Audrey) very seldom and would not assist me in obtaining a background check form, I was skeptical of this arrangement but decided to follow through anyways. I made an agreement with the student (Andy) to buy his couch, bed, air conditioner, and microwave stand so he wouldn't have to move them back to his hometown in Missouri. When we arrived at the apartment the door was ajar and the place was torn apart. The things I had agreed to buy had disappeared and remaining objects in the apartment (garbage, boxes, beer bottles, various food containers, etc) were scattered all over the place. When we called Audrey up to the room she was noticeably drunk and verbally assaulted my brother and I, claiming that she had cleaned the apartment because she was informed by Andy that the place had been vacated even though our arrangement was made very clear to her by both Andy and I, and that we had no quote "Mother f***ing business gettin' all up in her ---- with all this bullsh*t talkin' 'bout legal action and ----." Moments after she had elevated her voice to beyond a yell, 7 children ranging in ages between 10 and 16 surrounded her making cracking knuckles motions and fishing in their pockets for weapons. After we decided to leave without further argumentation, she kept screaming at us and the kids followed us all the way down the stairs and out the door. Later when I filed a police report I was informed by the police and my friend Scott at BSI holdings (whom I rented from the next day and have been very pleased with his eagerness to make up for my nightmare experience.) that this was one of very many reports of this kind from this property. It's really a bomb waiting to go off, so my advice is move in only if your valuables have very little value and you have very good renter's insurance. If you are without renter's insurance, you're playing the lottery with your own stuff and possibly your own life.
Oh and I neglected to mention that when I got into my car and was preparing to leave, a person was arrested at shotgun point by a very very angry police officer across the street leaving marcus market. I'm assuming he either robbed it or was selling drugs but I've never seen an officer find a shotgun necessary to arrest someone.
