Lots of security but little peace of mind

When you first look around the property you'll no doubt be impressed by the level of security. But take any description of the secure, quiet, safe complex with a pinch of salt (ask about the shootings last year or the vehicle crime in the area) and don't be fooled into thinking that this security presence is on hand to look out for you as an incoming resident.
As will become fairly obvious within a few weeks, the security is on hand to protect the management's property investment and little else. As a resident you'll pay top dollar for all the guys in securicor suits - may even expect them to come to your aid. But you won't have to wait long for a group of late night drunks to show otherwise. When a few of the late crowd from Chene Park decide to keep the whole building awake through 4am with their 400W in-car stereos parked below your windows (and this will happen fairly regularly) you can expect security to meekly drive around in their security trucks without saying a word.
But should you break the rules, go for broke and have a window box of flowers (not allowed), a welcome mat outside your door (not permitted), or ride a bicycle on the grounds (definitely no bikes) you'll very quickly find a note made by security and a letter pushed under you door from the property management company.
This is not the best area of town. Things can get fairly rough and some serious help on hand would be welcome. So paying through the nose for a secure environment is one thing you may expect, but paying for a group of voyeuristic paper pushers who are worse than useless when it comes down to looking out for the residents is just downright dangerous.

Please do tell about the shootings! I remember getting a note from Management last year saying that something terrible had happened on the property. I always wondered what the deal was but of course, no one in the leasing office would inform me.

Imagine that. How could anyone from the management office tell you anything. I don't think anybody has been there more than six months. Try talking to the person who answers the phone (---), can't understand a thing he says. ----is just a flat self surving liar. never follow through. Maintenance is busy getting phone numbers from girls, -------is okay but a bit rude. The new manager seemed okay but now she is gone too. No wonder I have have new neighbors every couple of months can't keep staff can't keep tenants. I talked to the owners son who was a joke. Has no problem taking cash and thinks people with criminal backgrounds are okay.

There was a triple homicide stemming from a bucket of KFC chic---, and greed.

110% agree - we're having the same kind of little------- issues with security. Even though detroit city code permits cycles to be parked and used on the sidewalks (and the sidewalks count as a public place beyond the property line) we get regularly jumped on by the property's security threatening to fine us for parking cycles outside of the apartments. It just makes it kind of obvious that the security here are management's enforcers not defenders of the residents in any way!!

I lived at Riverplace from 2005 to 2007, and left because of the excessive noise/music at Karras Brothers during the summer, the loud motorcycles, the incompetent staff, and the increase of everything but the decrease of amenities. I also believe someone went into my place and took $50 off my dresser.
I was at my place when 'the shooting' happened. There were 2 or 3 shots and they were very loud and scary. A note was sent to the residents but nothing was explained. I tried asking around and no one knew anything.
The neighbors were ghetto and loud, as well. I had to call security b/c a couple was fighting so loudly. They told me to call police. Loud music, also.
