Come to the Town Baby - you in Mo' Town

Years at this apartment: 1998 - 2001
In the summer of 1998, I was looking for a place to stay in Detroit. I was living in Kansas City but working at DTE Energy [then Detroit Edison] and commuting back on a weekly basis. I did this for about 3 months, and then moved to the much talked about Royal Oak in Michigan. Now Royal Oak is a fantastic town, but as a consultant I was doing some really strange hours at DTE and wanted to find someplace closer.
I talked to a lot of people at work and was advised to stay away from downtown. Having always been a rather adventurous type, this prompted the Crusoe in me, and in less than 2 weeks I found myself a comfy, spacious, fully furnished one-bedroom on the 9th floor of the Town Apartments and Suites [Apt. # 909 to be precise].
I had driven my 4Runner up from Kansas City [not a very pleasant drive mind you...particularly around the Il, Oh, MI bend] and found ample reasonably priced parking right across the street from the Town [around 30$ for a monthly pass I think]. My commute to work was a nice stroll across the road to DTE [mostly through the garage], and before long I was a rather popular "figure" in the intersection of First and Main, particularly late nights.
This worked rather well for me considering the hours at DTE, my propensity for the nocturnal life, and what not. Any way, now that I've bored you with the myriad mundane about me, my job and my "feeding" habits, let me come back to the topic - Town Apartments and Suites.
I had no illusions regarding the infrastructure in the Town [back in 1998] and I must admit that in all the maintenance of the facilities was fairly bad. However, once inside my unit, everything was peach. I had a wonderful maid, Marcie [if u are still around and reading this...how u doing girl'], who more than took care of me, and kept my unit as clean as clean can be.
The apartment itself is very close to the freeways, and to the MGM Grand Casino [which opened up soon after I moved in]. There's a lot of breakfast places around, and if you approach the neighborhood with the right attitude, I learnt that Detroit can be one of the friendliest places in the world.
The train station [the one's that run through Greek Town and the Renaissance Center] is a very walkable distance from the Town. If you are the sort that likes Greek Food, the Town offers you the luxury of trying out a different restaurant everyday [off the top of my head I remember Hellas, Greek Palace, etc]. With Fishbones for the Cajun connoisseur, Al Ameen, Talal's, and Lashish for the brothers from the Middle East, and a lot of ethnic and American restaurants not too far away [say within a 5 mile radius], you can't go wrong with the Town Apartments for food.
Shopping in downtown Detroit is perhaps best avoided, and if you are the kind that is looking for a HyVee or a Schmuks then you better drive down Michigan Avenue to Dearborn for your weekly groceries and all.
For entertainment, Detroit's night life is as good as any other for those with a wilder side....an alternative bar [forget the name of the place] is a couple of minutes by foot from the Town...so if you ever want to get dressed up in black, paint your face and pretend to be Dracula's date for the evening, hey bring on those Gothic juices....you're living in the "Town" babe!
But jokes apart, there are a lot of other good night clubs and dance floors that are within a 1-mile radius of Town Apartments and if don't mind a 10-minute drive across the bridge into Windsor, you'll find yourself in party haven!
In terms of living convenience and day-to-day problems, I must admit that I've never had a problem myself in the Town, notwithstanding the odd quirk. And when I did have an issue, the management was fairly right on in fixing it for me. There is a small gym in the first level, with some bare bones equipment, so if you're like me [not one of those Arnie type people], you should find the place suitable for a 30-minute workout say once or twice a week :-)
Well, so much for that - if you've taken the time to review my review then you should perhaps drive down/up to the Town and check it out.
Take Care!
