1. Huge hole in the bathroom
2. Huge air leakage at the entrance door. Stairs are as cold as outside
3. Air Leakage in both bedrooms specially the 2nd one where wall and floor joins
4. Air leakage from both bedroom windows
5. Heat vent clogged in 2nd bedroom
6. Two months Earlier problems
I moved in this apartment about 2 months back and since then I am regretting ever minute that I have to spend here. I moved into this apartment complex because it is conveniently located next to I275/96/696/M5/M14, looks great, has great floor plan, most importantly Southampton layout has windows in the Kitchen, lot of cross ventilation, conveniently located to shopping malls/strip malls etc having said that I realized after moving in the apartment that all these things are true but doesn t matter all that much if the apartment you are living in are full of problems and management gives a damn.
It is more than two months that I have submitted a big list of complains (submitted within the first week I moved in) and no one has cared even to take a look at it. Last time I visited the office they had tough time finding my work order from the big pile of other complaints. Embarrassingly, they accepted they were 2 weeks behind the schedule but looking at the pile of written work orders and that no one showed up even after 2 months, I will leave it to your imagination, how truthful they were in saying 2 weeks behind the schedule.
My experience from the day one was bad, when I went to see the apartments. The lady who showed us around was rude, sarcastic and her words and actions were clearly showing that didn t like her job. I heard about it earlier too from many people and reviews on the net but I went in with a mind set that if the apartments are good, I won t care for them.
After long argument and lot of request they clearly told me that it is their policy and I have to choose the apartment from the three options they give me. It is strictly their choice which apartments they will show you.
Few prominent Apartment Problems
1. Heater Never Stops - My gas heater never stops and I am paying huge bills. Initially I was told these apartments have cathedral ceiling that adds to the total area of the apartment and that s the reason heat bill is high. But the truth I found was totally different. There is a huge seepage of air from every window, balcony door, my stairs are as cold as it is outside the apartment. I can feel the air influx from the wall and floor joint. And worst of all, I found a huge hole all around the washbasin pipe in the bathroom. It is almost a week no one showed up besides repeated calls. My bedrooms are as cold as hell. If I set the thermostat at 80, then my room temp is close to 72-74 and if it is a cold and windy day then set it to max for a good night sleep.
2. Heater Noise Heater makes lot of noise but I guess we now got used to it.
3. Heater vents Vents are not clean. Lot of dust keeps falling out. Seems the vent in our 2nd bedroom is good enough to throw only dust but no hot air.
4. Dryer Lint It had tons of lint when we moved in. As usual, we complained no one listens and finally I had to clean it personally. It was so much full that I couldn t clean it entirely. There are many areas, specially on the door, where you need tools to open up and take out the lint or you need some good tool to suck it out. I tried with vacuum cleaner it didn t help. All my cloths are full of lint of someone else s cloths. Now I am using public laundry to wash my cloths with a hope someone will show up some day and we will again have a clean dryer.
5. Dryer Time It takes close to 80-90 minutes to dry up a simple load of cloths with no jeans or towels. Simple pants and shirts. Trust me it is not an exaggeration. I spoke with may of the residents and all of them except one, who has new Dryer, cry the same foul.
6. Dish Washer Our dish washer had a thick yellow layer cemented at the bottom. We complained no one took a look at it. Finally, I had to hard scrub it three times 30 min each to take out the sediments and multiple empty runs before I found it good enough to use it.
7. Freeway Noise & Dust - It is close to the Freeways that adds lot of noise and dust in the apartment. Doesn t look like they have installed enough of sealing to stop freeway noise and dust.
8. Dirty Vents - Doesn t look like the heater and vents are ever cleaned or inspected by the health departments.
9. I booked the apartment on Friday with one month off deal, next very next day they had two months off deal. They never told me and they did not give me that deal. All the time they kept saying this is a good deal. Who knows when it might be gone. They might be technically right but I thought it was misleading. They would definitely must be aware of the deal they were going to implement the next day and were intentionally hiding it from me.
My strict recommendation, please don t be fooled by the looks and other convenience of the apartment. Those are not all that important. The huge extra amount you pay on your heat bill could as well be used to buy at least 2 pairs of shirts and trousers each month or go out for nice family dinner each month.
