I met with the manager of this complex to view an apartment. She was very nice and showed me an upper-level 2 bedroom/2 bath facing the woods/wetlands. The apartment seemed nice though the entry door (to the building) and carpet (inside to the apartment) was pretty nasty. I was willing to overlook these things due to their reasonable pricing and other amenities. Two of the three staff members I met were very nice (the manager and younger leasing agent), however the older leasing agent simply sat in the corner and appeared to have an attitude upon first meeting.
Prior to viewing the apartment I discussed my credit issues with the manager (college foolishness divorce). She claimed this would not be a problem as they might simply require a higher deposit, etc. Since she assured me there wouldn't be any problems I handed over my $50 cash, my application and left. Shortly thereafter I received a call from the aforementioned attitude-ridden leasing agent. She had my credit report in hand and mentioned she had a few questions. I understood and told her to go ahead. She literally began going through my credit report line by line asking me about the situation with EACH item listed. She asked, "is this legitimate", "how about this", "when are you paying this", "what happened here". I was floored. She proceeded to advise me that she was "trying to help me". I have never, ever in my entire life, had a $12/hr. leasing agent call me to go through my credit report line by line. If the answer was going to be no, then tell me no and let me move on.
She did happen to find something that I had forgotten about from over 7 years ago that frankly, should have fallen off my credit report. I stated that I would immediately take care of the small debt she found to alleviate the issue. After the conversation/interrogation continued I finally decided I had enough and this was not a good start our business relationship; I promptly ended the conversation/call with, "this is not a conversation you and I should be having, and I am no longer interested in living at your complex". I simply considered my $50 application fee an "avoidance fee". :)
Honestly I've been sort of dumbfounded for the past few weeks since. I am a relatively young (30 years old), single IT Manager and have a decent salary of $62,000 per year plus over $10,000 per year in profit-sharing. I have great renter s history but unfortunately bad credit. I am amazed that Ford Credit or Sallie Mae was/is willing to loan me $25,000 but yet these people were unwilling to rent me an apartment at a measly <$800/month. I am literally speechless.
As a result I will never, ever return to Fairways at Woodfield. I will continue to use the influence I have to voice my opinion of this complex and send people elsewhere. In fact, I already have had that opportunity and have successfully sent someone elsewhere.
...just a warning if you have less than perfect credit... 3mPoZ6gGN6wTPgNi4L2C
