On my scheduled move-in day, the apartment was not ready to be occupied. We pulled a truck up to the loading dock outside with my stuff, and came upstairs to find the apartment trashed with tools and paint cans all over the place since the required maintenance wasn't complete yet. I called the emergency service number and the maintenance guy came over fairly quickly and moved most of the junk out of the way, but I had no choice but to move in with the maintenance only half done and a promise that it will be completed "within days". To this day- nearly a year later, some of my kitchen cupboards still don't have handles and there are several other problems that were never fixed.

The building looks great from the outside and has nice landscaping, but the inside has been allowed to deteriorate over the years. I've heard that this was originally a very fancy and upscale building over 80 years ago, but the current management hasn't maintained it. The elevator is apparantly ALWAYS broken and it usually takes several minutes to arrive if it's on a different floor, since it will sometimes go to random floors where nobody has signalled it. It simply isn't worth the time to ride it unless you're bringing groceries up or something. It's much quicker to just run up the stairs(even if you live on the top floor).

The radiator was a source of constant annoyance during the winter. The loud hissing noise was constant and it seemed to always be turned on full blast- closing the vents made no difference. I went most of the winter with a window or two open to keep the temperature under control.

The wiring system is old- most of the outlets are ungrounded 2-prong style so you're taking a risk if you hook up a computer or any other expensive hardware. Getting DSL internet service to work without interfering with phone reception was also hard and apparantly required a full day of work on the box in the basement, but fortunately the phone company picked up the tab for that. Once working though, the DSL was awesome, since you're close to the downtown central office.

The neighborhood itself is fairly nice, but like other people have mentioned, crime is out of control in some of the surrounding areas and you probably want to avoid heading more than a couple blocks to the south or east of here at night.

I've never had to park on the street like a lot of people have, although I have parked on the lawn a few times(hey, it's management's problem if they don't provide the parking space that I'm paying for in my rent!)

Despite all of these annoying things I've mentioned- this has actually been a pretty decent place to live. The location is nice- close to downtown and you're also in Heritage Hills(a status symbol if you're into that kind of thing).

My final and main complaint about this place is the neighbors and general unfriendly atmosphere. I know the management has no control over it, but I've met very few people who will even talk to me in the elevator or while doing laundry. I don't know most of my immediate neighbor's names because I never see them. I have had the police called on me for "loud" music and subjected to huge fines/court costs when the lady wouldn't even come over and ask me to turn it down first. From what I've heard this has happened to several other people as well. For someone used to living with fellow college students, coming here was a huge shock- the idea that people can live next to each other for years and never say "Hi" seems rediculous to me, but to each his own.
