I am back in GR after 20 years away.
I lived in the Oakwood Manor Studio apt 6 th floor courtyard side. When I moved in, rent was $110 a month if I remember right and $135 when I left. I did have to pay an extra $10 for air conditioner (my own)in the summer but it was worth it.

I LOVED the apt, it was small but for a bachelor alone in GR, it served the purpose.
The ladies LOVED the place! I was going to Davenport at the time and I could walk to class day or night and not have a problem as crime was not that bad, it was starting but when I left in 1985, it wasnt to bad.
I have a LOT of great memories of this buidling. Does anyone remember the restaurant "A Bit of Europe" that was in the basement and the full service beauty salon'
The place had it all. I can only imagine what it was like back the the 20's and 30's.
I actally found a post card on ebay one time that was of the oakwood, someone wrote in in 1939 talking about how great the place was.

I watched the whole 1984 Detroit Tigers season unfold from my perch on the 6th floor and screamed out the windonw on 10/14/84 to the world that they won it all!

Another great benefit was the fact that 80% of the tennants at the time were elderly people. Most of them didnt drive so parking was NEVER a problem. The nice little old ladies even kind of adopted me as a grandson giving me baked goods and food. Noise was NEVER a problem, the staff was awesome and the grounds were spectacular.

I used to love going to the mail room and chatting with all the folks. We had tea in the lobby once a month to catch up with each others lives.

I would LOVE to come back and check it out but based on these reviews, I would not recogonize the place with all the drinking, drugs, parking problems, crime and sex offenders living there, NO THANKS!
