I have had the pleasure of living at Oakwood Manor for a long time now, and would not want to live elsewhere in the hill. This facility was built in the 20's in the French Flat style, and has overall held up well. It is at the age where hard decisions must be made about a building...do the owners commit to major investment in its condition, or try to keep going by patching this, and ignoring that. I guess that's what the condominium project is going to address.
For years now, there have been a lot of students in residence. This has lead to a general downturn in conditions, as younger people are hard on a building. They also contribute to the noise factor, and the occasional vandalism problems. Some are really nice to have around though, and are respectful of their neighbors. I wonder why oakwood couldn't have gone back to renting to working adults like I've heard it did years ago...oh well.
The management for the past several years has been excellent. Very attentive to resident's needs, and quick to respond to problems. Now there is new management apparently, and they need to send a memo to update residents on what's going on in the office. Seems like they need to commit to an increased cleaning staff for common areas, which are occasionally in need of extra attention. Grounds are really nicely kept, beautiful in summer, and snow removal is usually done in a timely manner. Seem to have trouble keeping maintenance staff long term. Years ago, they had a staff member(Hank)who did nothing but paint and plaster the place full time. There used to be some senior citizens living here, and they were nice to have around.
If you appreciate living in a tony, historic neighborhood in a cool old building, while paying inexpensive rent with all utilities included, this is the place.
