Good while it lasted!

Like every apartment, Benson Hills has its pros and cons. It's not exactly luxury living, but it was the first place we ever rented and we overall had a wonderful experience there.
The pros: The location is WONDERFUL...you are literally walking distance to a grocery store, bank, movie store, and the lake. Malls and great shopping are minutes away. The apartments are a good size and the grounds are generally well-kept. In the summer, they give away a free half-flat of flowers to decorate your balcony. The area feels safe and was great for jogging or walking your dog. Our air conditioner broke down over the hottest week of summer and maintenance was literally out to fix it 20 minutes after I called. It needed parts that weren't available, and there was someone on my doorstep at 10:00 AM the next morning to take care of it. We NEVER had a problem finding places to park, and the covered parking spot was a big bonus...I really miss that right now!! Our unit had new carpeting in the bedrooms and while the walls weren't completely thick, we never really had a sound issue with any of our neighbors. Additionally, moving out was easy as could be with no hidden fees....although we did work hard to leave the place the way it was when we arrived.
The cons include having to share a laundry room with several other families, which is complicated by the fact that it takes two or three cycles to actually dry the clothes. Our cabinets showed significant wear from the previous owners and our bathroom was pretty dingy....the vents would leak sometimes and we had to fight HARD to prevent scum from growing in the shower. I also had my car broken into last Halloween, though the police arrived in 5 minutes and actually dusted for fingerprints, which is a luxury only afforded in a quality area like Haslett/Okemos. The office staff changed hands countless times from when we arrived a few years ago, but was a weak point that almost made us look elsewhere. The temp that worked there that summer knew nothing about rates, fees, etc. and the overall feeling was less professional then some of the competetors. However, the main leasing agent at the time let us take the keys to various open apartments and hand-select the one we wanted, which was nice.
We finally reached a point where we felt ready to move on to bigger and better things, but both agree that our years at Benson Hills were happy ones. There really aren't any immaculate, new apartment complexes in Haslett and BH really offered the best place for a decent price. $675 a month pales in comparison to what we are paying now, and that rate only went up $5 a month after living there two years.
After carefully researching all the apartments in Haslett, we realized that you can do a LOT worse then Benson Hills. It's a great starting place and certainly gets the job done.
