There are definitely both upsides and downsides to living at Canterbury Woods. First the down, because I like to get the bad out first:
Maintenance is abysmal. When we first moved in here the maintenance was on top of getting everything done, however, as of the last six months it is next to impossible to get anyone to come out.
I don't know what the office staff does with the work orders they write up, but I must assume that when you leave they put them through the shredder because as of late it is impossible to get anyone out to fix anything (despite daily calls to the office).
The problems we have had in our apartment are mild compared to what other residents have had happen, however, there have been some notable major problems, including a leak into our kitchen and bathroom from the apartment directly above us, having our cabinets in our kitchen falling apart, and the screens falling apart in our windows. These problems thus far have never been fully addressed by management.
In addition to the problems that have occurred within our domicile, the exterior door to our apartment is broken, and has been for some time now, which leaves the door wide open to anyone who wishes to walk in. Although (surprisingly) I feel safe in this complex, I certainly do not want my common door wide open for all to enter.
Though others have said that management is rude, I have found this to be false. They have always been courteous to me, however, that being said, they are incapable of getting anything accomplished. When it was time to renew our lease it took them two months to write up the new contract. This is simply unacceptable.
Additionally this "fair-share" heating thing is total --------! From how it was described both by the management and in the contract the "fair-share" takes and divides the heat used in the apartment by the number of apartments in a building so everyone should pay the same amount in heating costs. This is however not the case, because through consulting with neighbors it has become obvious that we do not pay the same amount. One month we are billed as much as $75 and the next it's $15, whereas our neighbor is paying the inverse. When confronted with this management stated that it was for personal consumption based on usage above the base amount, however, I know from one of the maintenance guys that this is impossible because there are no individual meters on each apartment. Not to mention, I am almost certain that the heat regulator has no function, because regardless of the setting it is either uncomfortably hot or cold. Last winter we left the heat all the way down for the entire duration of the winter, and yet the temperature fluctuated without any regards to the setting.
On the up side, the amenities are good. The laundry is in good order, the pool is nice in the summer, and the grounds are up kept well.
The price on this apartment is reasonable, and I feel safe in the complex, which given Inkster's reputation is something to be proud of.
There is plenty of shopping/restaurants in the area, and it's very close to a number of major roads, which is a major plus for me.
Overall, it's not bad living here. If maintenance would go back to how it was when I first moved in this place would be easy to recommend, however, in light of the recent inability to fix any problems, no matter how major or minor, I must recommend finding other accommodations. Unless conditions change I will be looking for somewhere new to live when my lease runs out.
