If you like funny stories to tell your friends, look no further than Mansard House Apartments.
I lived there for a full year, and in that time, the following stuff went wrong in our apartment:
-The refrigerator (which was not frost free) got plugged up (since the drain pan hadn't been cleaned in the 30 years or so it had been in this apartment) and started an ice dam in the freezer.
-The furnace thermostat was stuck so that the furnace was stuck on, called maintenance, he didn't come out. So, since they paid the heat, we just opened the windows up and enjoyed the heat. Until the furnace caught fire. Consumer's said that the furnace looked like it hadn't been cleaned in 10 years. It took MHA three weeks(!!!) to replace the furnace, in the middle of a Michigan winter!!
-A pipe started leaking in the ceiling. Called for maintenance, the guy actually brought us a mop. Like they planned on letting this go. They did. And instead of just having to replace a little section of drywall, they had to rip out cupboards, floors, carpet, and studs to fix the problem. Our entire apartment flooded. Lots of damage. Reimbursement from management' $2 to run some of our towels that we used to mop up the water (luckily it wasn't sewage) through the washer.
-The apartment developed an infestation of carpenter ants. This really happens a lot in garden level apartments, I understand that. But a can of RAID isn't the solution -- a good exterminator is. Guess which solution we got'
There's probably more, but it was a while ago. The thing is, the people that worked there were both pretty nice and easy to talk to, but they weren't really good at handling the problems of a dilapidated complex.
