You get what you pay for--

-- sort of. The rent is fairly cheap compared to that of the apartment complexes in the area, and oh, does it show. It shows so much and in such a bad way that the rent is steep for what you?re actually getting. The apartment complex is pretty shabby, due to the almost complete lack of maintenence done on it. The only work I?ve _ever_ seen done was the cable company coming to be obnoxious at 9am while I was trying to sleep. The roof is badly in need of some repair, and I?d hate to live on the 3rd floor during a storm when it becomes painfully obvious. The laundry faciluties are really crappy, and what machines do work don?t function terrible well. Plus, they?re pretty expensive, and you may just be better off hitting up the laundro-mat down the street. The parking lot is also in bad shape, and they don?t salt it in the winter, even though there?s a really steep hill leading down to the street. If your car doesn?t have 4WD, it WILL get stuck at least a few times during the wonderful Kalamazoo winter.
There?s a 90% chance your neighbors will be extremely loud at almost all times of the day and night, and drunk almost every night of the week. The latter wouldn?t be so bad if it didn?t make them and 15 of their friends twice as loud. If you have early classes or a first-shift job, beware. If you enjoy sleeping in, beware. If you need to do a lot of studying, beware. Also watch out for the vomit in the hallways, which are ridiculously hot all year round, and smell REALLY weird. They also give off a nice "cheap hotel" ambiance. If you get up any later than 9am during Fall or Winter semester, you?re probably not going to have any hot water. On the weekends I?ve had to wait till after 2pm to finally get enough of it to take a shower.
The apartments are decently sized, which is nice, and the closets are really huge. We put an extra matress in one of ours and let friends crash on it (they can?t sleep long, though, because the insulation between apartments in the closets and bathrooms are really horrible -- see parahraph above). Shell out the fee to get your apartment cleaned, because you definately don?t want it "as is". I?ve never seen a kitchen so dirty! The furnishings in the apartment are awesome, if you like ugly wooden furniture that?s prone to breaking and olive green fridges that leak. Live in suburban ghetto style! If you can, get one of the two bedroom corner apartments towards the back of the complex. They?re absolutely gigantic, and I think they pay the same rent as everyone else.
The location of the apartment complex is pretty nice, and you can walk to campus pretty quickly, and there?s a bus stop right across the street. The parking situation is rarely a problem, and you can usually find a parking spot rather quickly. The landlady is an airhead and dresses like she?s in middle school, but the maintenance guy is cool.
