I lived at Western Pines for two years so they must have been doing something right. The staff was always pleaseant and quick to respond to any maintenance concerns. The best thing about living at WP is that cable and Internet service were included in the price of rent, and the complex is right on the busline to campus and downtown so you really don't need a WMU parking permit (save $300!). Plus, the rent is comparable to other complexes near campus as is the noise for a complex with all student residents. If you care to walk, campus is about 20-30 minutes down the road, too. The downsides are no central air or diswashers in the units (although I hear they have diswashers now). I had an apartment on the second floor with roomates during my two years there and the back bedrooms got super hot in the summer. We'd run two or three fans at night just to clear-out the bedrooms of excess heat, or just drag our mattresses out into the living room for the summer. In the winter, the big balcony door made the living room/kitchen area very cold, so we had to weatherize it which saved $$$ on heating expenses and worked OK. Otherwise, any guest parking is pretty much a nightmare; no guest spots so you best have friends park at Firehouse and walk. Try not to get a building that's near Firehouse, either. It's rough on weekends if you have to get up early for work; the noise will keep you awake and K'zoo police don't seem to do much about it. Otherwise, I'd recommend this place to new transfer students and those just getting out of the dorms. Good luck!
