I wouldn't live there again!

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2007
My husband and I moved in to Woodland Lakes Apartments about 2 1/2 years ago. We recently relocated out of state so we no longer live there. When we were initially looking for an apartment we were overjoyed to find Woodland Lakes. The grounds were very pretty, everything was practically brand new, all standard appliances were included, and it seemed like the other residents were of a respectable nature. We didn't start to experience any problems for a few months. However, as our time there went on, we started to experience many problems.
1. The apartments are very cheaply constructed. It is almost like living in a two-story home where you can hear someone speaking in the next room or upstairs. The walls are literally paper-thin and you can actually clearly hear everything everyone is doing, even if they are trying hard not to be loud. The burbar carpeting is a good idea at first, but in high-traffic areas the soil from shoes becomes ground in the fibers and creates dirty sheen which is impossible to clean. Believe me, I've tried...I actually steamed cleaned the carpets about once every two weeks.
2. Over the 2 1/2 years, the grounds started to look less than desirable. It was almost as if they initially planted to attract renters, then let everything die and did not bother to replant. The groundspeople repeatedly break the glass patio doors of those who live on the lower floor, so please do not walk barefoot on the grass! I agree with the previous comment regarding the "ponds." At first glance, they are passable. But if you look closer, they do not drain properly and it almost looks like various raw sewage plants scattered around the property.
3. I love children, but it is constantly like a school recess in the parking lots. Parents do not do a good job keeping an eye on their children and repeatedly there are children (some of them barely five or six years old!) running around between cars and in the driveways not looking where they are going on their bikes and rollerblades. And forget trying to lay out by the pool...it is very small and not accomodating the huge amount of children who play there during the summer months.
4. Parking is adequate. They have carports but often they are quite far away from your actual apartment entrance. I'm young so I didn't mind that at all, but if you're more challenged walking longer distances or if you're carring groceries it can become annoying.
5. The kitchen does not have adequate storage space. There is wasted space with the water heater being kept in a "pantry" of sorts in the kitchen....should be outside like most apartments.
6. I agree that the internet was very unreliable. And the only option for cable is to order cable through Woodland Lakes, which was archaic and way too expensive for what it was....what a scam!
7. Management is wishy-washy. They can be helpful at times, or completely rude. I once had packages to pick up from the office and as I was attempting to open the door and carry 3 heavy cartons, no one even attempted to open the door for me! All 3 people in the office just sat at their computers looking at me.
8. There is only one trash compacter for the entire complex. It does get annoying hauling trash in your car only to find the compacter jammed packed and garbage overflowing into the parking lot. Parking lots became very dark at night and street lamps weren't fixed as soon as possible, most often months after they were originally burned out. Safety in the complex is not an issue, though.
Overall, our stay there was "okay" because we knew it to be temporary, but I would not live there again! There are too many nicer apartments, some even lesser-priced, being built in the area, especially in Okemos and East Lansing.
