Nobody should ever live in these apartments

Portsmouth Apartments are owned by Edward Rose and Sons, a huge corporation that couldn't possibly care less about it's customers. I have had problem after problem while living in this complex. Let me count the ways.

1. They refused to let me see my actual apartment before moving in. They showed me "one that looks like it" instead. Fishy' Yes. They claimed that this was their policy. I was assured that my apartment would be just like the one I was shown. When I moved in, I found that it was not the same. One of the biggest problems is that the carpet was not just a different color, it was obviously old, worn and stained in spots.

2. There have been many occasions in which I've asked for repairs to be made, and waited several weeks for them to be done. Once I had to call 3 separate times, each 3 weeks apart, before they finally came in and did the repairs. Each time I called, the person claimed that there was no record of my request. Really' My request disappeared magically into thin air twice in a row' Sounds logical.

3. Most repairs made are only temporary repairs. The item will be broken again within 2 weeks of repair. Examples:
a) Refrigerator has been leaking ever since I moved in. Each time they fix it, it is in need of repair 2 weeks later.
b) My front door lock has been in need of replacing ever since I moved in. To lock or unlock the door, you are required to pull out on the door handle with one hand while carefully turning the key with the other. Each time this is repaired, it is in need of a new repair within 2 weeks.
c) Broken Dryer Hose - Dryer hose has been broken since move in. Each time I ask for a replacement, they put duct tape on the old one.
d) Bedroom cable outlets - Haven't worked since I moved in.
e) Carpet - I've requested that the old, worn out and stained carpet be replaced. This is the original carpet from when the apartments were built. Portsmouth simultaneously acknowledges that the carpet needs to be replaced and says that they will not replace it unless I agree to pay higher rent. They want an extra $20/month for 36 months. In other words, they want me to pay them $720 to fix their apartment for them. I took my case to the attorney general, and all they did was shuffle letters back and forth between me and Edward Rose and Sons for in excess of one full year. Nothing was accomplished and Portsmouth apartments still refuses to change out carpet that they readily admit needs to be changed.

4. Real Cable and High speed internet is NOT available. The complex controls the cable, and very badly I might add. They do not allow their tenants to use Time Warner, the company that is supposed to be in charge of the area. They do not offer cable internet, and they do not allow customers to have DSL on the phonelines. Basically, you're screwed.

5. The granddaddy of them all - A couple of years ago, Portsmouth placed an eviction notice on my door. They claimed that I owed them $35. Then they added $65 for court filing fees as well as $80 in late charges. The complex had never notified me that I owed money, let alone explained why it was owed. I tried contacting the person in charge. They never returned my calls, and when they did, they offered no answers. I offered to pay them the amount that I originally owed, provided they could tell me why it was owed. Still no answer. So, I went to court. Their attorney tried to "cut me a deal" outside of the courtroom if I would pay him $140. I told him that Edward Rose & Sons was wasting his time as well as mine, and that I would meet him in the courtroom. I explained the situation to the judge. The outcome' The judge looked at their attorney, told him that they were wasting the court's time, his time, and the money of the community. He also told them that they need to learn how to communicate with tenants. Good day, sir.

Do a search on Ed Rose & Sons and their million dollar cable battle with Lansing, which they ultimately won, and you know why you can't get the cable you want.

Ed Rose & Sons built my house and I have had an especially difficult time with them because they refused to do something about the driveway, which began to pit and spall just a year after I owned the house--and I never used salt on the driveway. 6 yrs and 40 contacts to/with them later, they finally fixed about 1/4 of the concrete, so I had the rest fixed on my dime and filed a small claims case against them. Their lawyer has now moved the case to civil court. If I could organize a class action suit, I'm sure all kinds of homeowners and renters would come out of the woodwork...based on many, many things I've learned from other unhappy customers.

the o.p. has some serious issues, i agree.
and that would be LYING!!
1.u will never receive anything more than a letter for a balance for less than 100.00 and never would court fees be added to a like amount, so that entire story is b.s.
2. every apartment community puts a carpet premium on apartments with replaced carpet..the only reason you even know is because u were already living there or you applied prior to the previous tenants moving out.
3. it is not a "policy" to show u a different apartment. portsmouth and the springs ahve so many people wanting to live there that they barely have enough time to turn them over and your apartment probably wasn't ready yet.
4.dsl is welcome and available in all of the communities.. i am on mine right now!! and no one is "supposed to be in charge" of any area. they either own the cable lines or buy the rights. ed rose happens to own theirs. time warner and comcast have no business there.

so i would suggest u get yourself a life and stop living the pretend one that you have made up.

I can attest to what the first person said about the carpet. They told me that they contract out the work for carpet cleaning. In my opinion, they need to pop in and check out the crappy work that the carpet cleaners are doing. After 3 attemps of getting these losers to clean my apartment, I went out and rented me a cleaner for $20 and did one hell of a clean job myself. They are really ripping us off by charging us carpet cleaning fees and the job is not getting done.
