I've been living in Portsmouth for almost two years now.
Up until this point I've been very happy and have had no problems and enjoyed my living there.
BEWARE however of late rent!....I am very responsible and have never been late in paying my rent until this month (when I mistakenly paid a car payment twice and missed my rent payment on April 1).
I then was out of town during the dates of April 5-15.
When I arrived back home, I had received a late notice on April 5th advising that rent late fee must be received no later than April 14 to avoid court action being taken against me.
I called the managment office immediately to explain my situation/plead my case as this was an honest mistake.
Portsmouth would not budge.
I now owe an additional $140.00 in late fees/"court costs".
I've never experienced such inflexibility considering the fact that I have been a stellar tenant up to this point having never previously been late with rent or had any issues whatsoever with management.
I found it very interesting that the court "fees" took effect on Good Friday - when I'm sure the courts were not even open.
Lesson learned, I guess.

This same exact thing happened to me. I am a very responsible and reasonable person. I had forgotten to pay rent for the month of May, 2006. Come May 15th my girlfriend gets a notice in the mail from Portsmouth saying legal action will be taken and a court date is being determined. The funny thing is the first thing stated in the letter said "We have previously sent you a letter regarding late payment on May 5th, 2006." WE NEVER GOT THIS LETTER!!!!! I immediatly called Portsmouth and paid the rent for the time being and later, after a LOT of complaining and bull crap ended up having to pay half the court fees ($65, Portsmouth paid the other half) plus $40 in late fees. What really ticked me off was the fact that we never recieved the first letter they claimed to have sent. A couple days after paying the rent, late fee, and court fees I found a copy of all the court information and my personaly information rolled up and placed between the doorknob and door frame of my apartment. ANYBODY could have taken this and got a lot of personal information and I would have no idea! GEE, I wonder why I never got the first letter regarding late payment? Any of Edward Rose' apartments are TERRIBLE, it's just too bad he owns 90% of the apartments in this area. |
