Alright, but document everything

We moved in at the end of April 2009. The apartment itself is fine as are the grounds. The maintenance staff is great, very quick to take care of any issues that come up and fortunately, there have been very few.
We were put in a building with dogs even though we requested a dog-free building. We were told that we would definitely be in a dog-free building, but there was some office mix-up when they were assigning our apartment, they switched us to a building with dogs and forgot about our request and to tell us that we would be in a building with dogs. Not a huge deal, but annoying that this was overlooked by the office staff.
On our first tour, we were told we could have a grill on the small deck outside the apartment. However, when we stopped by to check out the apartment after signing the lease and paying the deposit, we were told by a different leasing agent that grills were prohibited. We could only have a camper sized grill and that had to be used on the sidewalk. This was a disappointment to us and would normally be a deal breaker when it comes to choosing an apartment, but we were already locked in at that point.
Another office related issue we had was related to our pet deposit. We paid a deposit initially for the cat when making our overall deposit. I had on paper what the move-in costs would be after that. When I called to check what we owed for the move-in expenses and the first month's rent I was quoted a specific number (same number I had on paper from the agent) and budgeted accordingly. However, after calling to double check this, I was quoted an additional $300 - this was not included in the paperwork for the move-in costs or when I called to confirm this. With the stress of moving, this did not help and left us very frustrated.
Important information to note - if you want to claim your $100 Visa gift card from rent.com, make sure that you say you heard about the complex on rent.com at the very first meeting. I included it in the paperwork, as that is what we did at our previous apartment and had no problem at all, so this was another point of frustration that we have experienced.
Overall, the actual complex and apartments are a good value for the cost. Our frustrations have all been because of communication - or lack thereof - with the office staff. Be very careful to document everything and save every bit of paperwork.
