I've been in Cardinal Court for 18 months now, and I still think I have the best apartment deal in Royal Oak. I pay $540 a month, including cat rent and carport, for a sunny one-bedroom within walking distance of two markets, a pet supply store, and other shops on Woodward. Birmingham is just a couple of miles up the road. They don't look like much from the outside, but inside they are neat and well-maintained.

One caveat (okay, two): my apartment faces Woodward, and I admit the street noise might bother some people. But if you're a heavy sleeper, it's not too bad. And there are apartments that don't face Woodward. Second caveat: Dream Cruise is a nightmare (unless you are part of it) if you live here. I just leave town a couple of days beforehand.

The apartment itself is nothing fancy (no dishwasher or central air), but that's how they keep the prices down. I have plenty of big windows for air and natural light. I've never had any appliance or heating problems. The couple of minor problems I've had have been handled right away. I have had a couple of bouts with bugs (earwigs in spring, small ants in fall), but they don't last long and I am on the ground level, so it's not surprising. Neighbors are mostly quiet and friendly.

Bottom line: if you want an affordable apartment in a great neighborhood (near houses that sell for $250K), Cardinal Court is for you!
