Nice, But Has It's Share of Problems

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006
Village Green of Southgate West has a nice appearance at first glance. But, just like any other apartment complex, the longer you live there, the more you realize the details. This is considered a luxury community, however, the prices are pretty comparable. This community is older than some of the other communities in the area, and as such, the other communities are more expensive. Parking is generally okay, but after 10 PM, there are no spaces near most resident's doorways, so you have to make a long walk from the closest parking space to your apartment. The noise level is minimal. The grounds are a mixed bag of good and bad. The landscaping is kept nice looking for the most part with the exception of a little trash here and there that's neve picked up as far as I can tell. But the streets are atrocious! As if being narrow was not enough, the streets are riddled with large potholes, gashes, large cracks and horrible drainage. They were repaired in late 2005/early 2006, but they are still horrible. A complete repavement and widening is definitely in order. The garbage dumpster is always filled to capacity. Increasing the garbage pickup per week would resolve this. There seems to be high safety as the local police patrol the grounds by car regularly. The exterior construction of the apartment buildings look pretty nice, but there are some things that eye-sores such as the siding peeling away from some of the buildings and large pieces of trim hanging or missing. Most smaller exterior issues could be fixed with something as simple as paint and nails but this was never done during my stay. The interior is where this complex shines. The apartments are setup nicely with large panoramic windows, modern fireplaces, appliances, and water heaters, and nice carpet and tiling that is very pleasing. I did have problems with the fireplace fluke staying closed and heat escaping from under the panoramic window seal. However, maintenance is probably the single most complaint I had with this complex! Yes, even worse than the streets! There were several examples of their incompetence. From replacing a window with the wrong design that wasn't noticed until it was installed, to leaving cables running across the living floor, to not even getting to most of the issues on the the initial checklist, to taking months to resolve one small problem. The list goes on and on. I could live with most issues, but some were just intolerable. Fortunately, the management and sales staff made up for some of this. They were very competent, approachable, and nice all the time, even if a little slow to process resident requests. Some other reasons I would recommend this community is the very nice swimming pool and indoor jacuzzi; the very nice clubhouse and small fitness room; the close proximity to shopping and public transportation, schools and the main interstate. Management will also work with new applicants to allow them to get into an apartment. There's also the option of paying the rent online, but at $22.95 for each payment, that's too expensive to take advantage of. There are also walking trails and a good sense of privacy. Lease equity is also an option. One important note is this complex does not offer any paid utilites. Overall, Village Green of Southgate West could be the nicest place to live in the area, but with all it's problems it is just average compared to some other complexes within 10 miles. It is nice, but not the best and it has it's problems, but it's not the worse.
