A bit overpriced, but it has its good points

If you need to live in Troy and don't want to be in a dump, you either need Village Park or Somerset Apartments. Somerset is way too expensive, so invariably, you'll end up at Village Park.

The buildings are alright, but old. There are quite a few neat features. The cross-breeze apartment layout allows for you to have windows open on each side of the apartment which keeps things fresh. They are slowly modernizing the Kitchen cabinets and bathrooms. The water pressure is unbelievably excellent and there is a ton of hot water. Due to the brick construction, and plaster walls under the drywall, noise from the neighbors is minimal. There are lots of big closets, and a great storage cage for each apartment in the basement.

The managment people from 1/1/02 - about June sucked. The current group are pretty decent. Mario is cool.

Bad points are that the security gate at the front has never worked and has frequently been busted right off. The dumpsters are not emptied often enough. The in wall air conditioners are useless and expensive to run. The grounds are mowed but nor really cared for... don't plan on seeing any flowers like at Somerset. The laundry rooms are woefully inadequate and cost $1.25 to do the wash, $1.00 to dry. The machines are new, there just aren't enough, and there is no work table or anything. The so called gym is a joke.

The wiring may be suspect. We have had two stereo components mysteriously stop working. Definitely need a UPS for your computer. Cable modem is available and works well. Comcast ran all the wires so no worries there. Only had two service interruptions in two years. DSL was available, and close enough to switcher. Unfortunately it is run by SBC Ameritech and they failed to install for 45 days before we went with cable modem instead.

All of the provided appliances work well and are new enough. They make a huge deal about supplying you with this microwave that hangs under the cabinet... I don't get it. Seems to be a holdover from the 80's or something.

There are quite few spiders here but the vacuum puts them under control for a few months at a time.

Moving in is easy enough. Kind of a hike from the street to the door, but the hallways are wide enough.

Speaking of hallways, to our mind, even worse than the slow dumpster pickups is the condition of the hallways. Seems like once a month someone may clean it... for all we know it has been another tenant. Because of the design the hallways get hot and stuffy; couple that with no vacuuming and spiders and it gets a little annoying.

The people here are alright. There are a lot of techno-workers who seem to come and go quickly from the USA to their own country. There are many young single professionals. We have met first generation Russians, Pakistanis and Japanese. There is not a real sense of community, but the managment tries with these semi-successful monthly parties.

Finally, as far as security goes, we don't think there is any. No alarms, no guards and a busted gate. We have never seen or heard of anything shady going on, (Troy is pretty safe,) but there really ought to be something.

All in all, you can do a whole lot worse than this place. We have, and will continue to recommend the place to others.
