Decent cheap living for younger people, I suppose.

This community provides decent living space for those who are willing to exchange cheap rent for a "downscale" environment. The quality of the people, staff and building are quite related to the inexpensive rental cost. The actual apartment interiors are quite nice, spacious with large balconies and an accommodating layout. The exterior, or "common" areas are somewhat different, in contrast. People find it acceptable to pile trash in whatever manner they feel fit in the designated trash rooms, instead of taking the 15 seconds to open the trash chute and deposit they trash accordingly. When the door to these rooms eventually becomes blocked with tenant's waste, it then apparently becomes acceptable to deposit your trash in the hallway surrounding the trash room, in whatever manner you see fit. It seems to me a large population of the building were smokers, and I could actually smell the lingering scent of airborne smoke in MY own apartment at times, although a cigarette was never set ablaze in my living space. Either smokes travels like wildfire though the building material or I had the convenient situation of being situated adjacent to or above the world's heaviest smoker. Another downside to living in this facility is the weekend activity of certain younger tenants. Having recently graduated college, I myself am by no means a docile being, but even so was looking to lead a more tame weekend life then did a few of my fellow residents. Occasional mornings involved overstepping broker beer bottles and fresh vomit - both apparently cast from the balconies above. We've seen multiple managers in our term additionally - which retarded certain processes like obtaining new keys, etc. Initially our keys were cut by a neighboring hardware store - and we were later informed that this particular store's duplicates were a "hair off" form their original counterparts. This explained the need to jiggle they key in both the main and apartment door keyholes for 2 minutes before the key would catch and the bolt actually turn. Very irritating. The complex also boasts a small group of elderly and physically/mentally handicapped persons who frequently convene in the "lounge" area of the building. I was personally somewhat disturbed by this site and commonly avoided the area. Some may not be so superficial / politically incorrect however. Cleanliness was another issue that I was forced to question. The hallways just never smelled "clean," and come to think about it I haven?t seen "cleaning personnel" in the hallways since I've moved in. I've observed the same stains on the walls and food/trash/debris in the hallway each day as I return from work and head to my door. It seems this material has not only remained for a considerable amount of time, but hasn't been moved or even kicked around by staff. I think once I actually contemplated taking my own vacuum to the hallway, but decided against it in the thought that I would get to filthy in doing so. In general - if the afore-mentioned issues do not concern or bother you, by all means, this place is for you! The rent is cheap, the neighbors are "friendly" (although I don't think I've ever seen anyone but me or my fianc' in the hallway) and the soundproofing is actually commendable. On a positive note, I rarely heard noise from neighbors above or below, and I doubt they hear mine either, even when I've got my stereo or home theater at an overly-audible volume. Not having a washer/dryer was in unit was a bit of an issue from me additionally, as it can actually get fairly pricey to use the community ones located on every floor - $3.00 per load.
