I've lived here since 92. My husband and I chose International Place because we were coming to Ann Arbor to finish school. We moved from an hour away and were basically ignorant - we didn't know about this website and didn't know anyone in the area that could tell us that this place is a crappy slum.
I've had to call 911 6 times in the last 6 months or so for everything from noise to the people across the hall beating their child. The previous review is accurate about the noise levels (many totally disrespectful, inconsiderate people living in this complex). They were also right on about the bugs - we have had several different species of bugs in our apartment over the years. Mostly spiders and earwigs. The walls are paper thin and shabby. We've had someone over to fix our stinky, leaky wall-unit air conditioner 3 times, and it's still not fixed.
I walked in on a drug deal in the laundry room. That was fun. A couple of weeks ago, I had to call the office because some idiot put a large jar of yellow liquid with a brown layer at the bottom underneath the stairs outside our door. It took them 10 days and two phone calls from me to remove it. We frequently come home at night to a drunk homeless man sleeping underneath those same stairs. He likes Colt 45.
But the best by far happened last night... 5 shots fired outside our "garden level" window. Gunshots. Shortly after, we heard the people in the apartment above us banging around on the ventilation ducts and fishing around for something... maybe they dropped their keys down the vents at 2am... and then my husband heard a gentleman say, "is there anyone livin' downstairs'" Great. So whatever he was fishing around for in the ducts may have fallen into OUR ducts. Nice. So we were up the whole night waiting for someone to try and get into our apartment to retrieve whatever item they dropped into the ventilation ducts. I called the police, but apparently they don't have the tools to dismantle our heating ducts. Dang.
I'd like to break my lease, but I'd have to give them like, $3000 PLUS pay for my new, safe apartment. So I guess we're stuck here until January. Hopefully we won't have to do military crawls around our apartment again before then.
My advice: DO NOT LIVE HERE. DON'T DO IT.

So..... If you've lived here since "92", and feel unsafe and have so many problems, why the hell are you still here and why the HELL do you keep renewing your lease. Sounds to me like that is a personal issue.

Actually, I wrote this review and was just looking back over it - I meant 2002, not 92. I'm sure you're not suggesting that I lied in my review. And as far as "why the hell" I continue to renew my lease... I won't be and in fact, will be breaking it and moving. I won't be sleeping in this rathole by this time next week, Misty. It absolutely is a "personal issue." I take my personal safety extremely seriously. Personally, I feel that the people who are posting reviews and responses on this website that are so incredibly favorable towards this place are probably in some way employed by it. I have NEVER spoken to one person in this town who considers International Place to be anything but a ghetto. So I am not renewing my lease, Misty. Thanks for asking.
