In December 2006, McKinley took over management of Aspen Chase. They've done a great job cleaning up the undesirables and fixing up the place.
When I was about to move in I was scared by some of the reviews I read here. After talking with the McKinley representatives, I also called the Washtenaw County Sherrif's Department. The officer I spoke to told me that crime rates have dropped tremendously there, and that while they do get calls occassionally there for domestic disputes or car break-ins, they are within the rates across the rest of the Township. To quote the officer, "I wouldn't discourage you from living there."
The apartments are in decent condition. What maintenance issues I've had have been dealt with fairly promptly. There was a horrendous pharoah ant infestation (noted by other reviews), but after several months (!!) of complaining they finally hired a company to get rid of them across the entire apartment complex. I don't know if the ants will return, but they've definitely got them under control for the time being.
My one complaint left is the utilities. McKinley goes through a company called AUM, and AUM is a lying piece of filth that gladly rips off its customers. AUM handles water, sewage, gas, and trash collection. My bill in March was $180. One-hundred eighty freaking dollars. That was with the heat set to 70 or less all month, too. Note that this bill does not include electric service. Disgusting. This is being looked into, but as of right now, McKinley hasn't done anything to solve this.
Most of the reviews on this site - even those posted in 2007 - seem to be from people who moved out years ago. I have no doubt the place used to be awful (some of my own friends have told me similar stories from when they lived there years ago), but it's pretty cleaned up now. If you don't trust what the McKinley agents tell you or what I'm saying here, just call the Washtenaw County Sherrif's Department and ask!

I agree with the AUM comment. The utilities are on top of rent and can exceed $300 per month. This is a total rip off.there is only one meter per building,so I'm assuming they pull this number out of their asses. The complex is run down.the appliances are outdated in my building and the management is useless. They have made numerous mistakes in not recording my rent payments accurately. The bookkeeper is ditzy as hell and obviously knows not what she is doing!!!! Public assisted housing is better than this place...counting the days to the expiration of my lease!!!!
