You get what you pay for

Years at this apartment: 2008-01-01 - 2009-01-01
I moved into The Pines in fall 2008 and my first impression was pretty good.
They draw you in with their seemingly friendly, youthful staff who boast about the java cafe, pool, laundry lounge, etc.
and lead you around to some very nice models.
I liked the location and environment - lots of trees and open space - and the price was right.
But I was also lured in by their FREE CRUISE promotion!!
Of course nobody tells you that there was a deadline for the promotion, because then that means they would actually have to give it to you! I moved in 2 days after the promotion expired and felt very tricked and deceived.
There were several issues with the apartment at move-in, but I admit that I am very picky.
Carpet stains, sticky residue on the bathroom walls, stains in the bath tub, paint peeling off of the window frames...
But it was clean.
I came home from work not once but twice to find a notice on my door that I had failed to pay my rent or did not pay in full.
I always paid my rent early and in full.
So both times I had to take this letter to the office and deal with incompetent staff who wasted my time and couldn't answer my question as to why I was receiving these notices.
They repeatedly made errors on the rent amount that was agreed upon in my lease terms that I had to straighten out myself.
How frustrating.
While living here I've also dealt with showers that alternate between scorching hot and freezing cold on a daily basis and a washing machine that was broken and not maintenanced for a week, with no sign notifying residents not to use it.
I also got the run-around from maintenance multiple times when calling the maintenance emergency #.
Upon reporting an issue the person on the line will tell me I need to call somebody else I've never heard of.
I shouldn't have to play phone tag with multiple people to get my shower or my heat repaired! Also, the roads are pretty terrible.
There are huge bumps, potholes, and cracks in the asphalt.
Roadways and parking lots are ALWAYS flooded when it rains.
Overall I can say that you get what you pay for.
It's a convenient location and the problems I've experienced seem to be pretty typical of apartment living.
The office staff seem to be more friendly lately with new faces.
Of course experiences vary but I think it's a decent place if you're looking to save money and don't mind putting up with occasional annoyances.
I'll have to report back on how my attempts to obtain my security deposit go!
