Not worth it

I lived at Cedars for two years while finishing a masters degree at the U of M. It was a perfect location, the downtown bus would pick me up right outside of the main office. However, this is the extent of the honeymoon.
There are a few good things about the property and many bad.
The bad
1.The Stench!
I think most of my issues can be attributed to the family across the hallway, however I would push a towel under the door every night to keep any air from the hall out of my apartment and consistently ran an air purifier and sprayed Lysol. If you love the smell of curry, perhaps the smell will not be an issue for you.
2.The pool.
Never venture into the indoor pool unless you want to itch. The countless foreign nationals use the indoor pool as their weekly or monthly bath, you can almost feel the human oils as you swim through the water. The outdoor pool is perfect, for the first month of the season. During this time the water is new, and it is too cold for the foreigners. However, after the temperatures rise the water feels thick.
3.Plumbing.
I lived on the bottom floor, and the way the plumbing was built, I share the same drain pipe as the two apartments above me. My upstairs neighbors staple food was rice, and they would wash it down the drain nightly. Three times in the two years I lived there a clog would develop right below my drain and the resulting pressure from the drains above would explode into my sink and flood my kitchen. Maintenance would go into the parking garage, open up the end of our communal drain pipe and snake out the clog from below. The end result would be hours of cleaning on my part and the remains of the clog festering on the floor of the underground parking garage.
4.General Age.
The buildings were built in the 70s, all of the fixes and maintenance performed on my building and unit were cosmetic. They will never be able to attack the main issues unless the buildings are gutted. Personally, I believe the ownership is milking this baby until the land is bought and the entire community is bulldozed. If a developer were to purchase the antiquated office building on France and Cedars of Edina, they would have the perfect setting to create another extension to centennial lakes.
5.Management
I dont even want to elaborate.
The Good
1.Location
2.Location
3.Location
I am extremely happy to be out of Cedars. The whole complex is ready for demolition. Apparently, this place was a pimp pad in the 70s Northwest stewardesses, and Vikings frequently rented here creating a bachelors paradise. However, the time has come to put this one to bed.

Couldn't agree more. Ridiculously overpriced. You are paying for location. For me, it's worth it. Another positive to me is the very nice square footage of the one-bedroom I'm renting. Personally, I have never had anything bad to say about the staff. They seem to know this place is a dump, and they've always been very helpful, probably out of pity. It's funny that on our tour here, they bragged about the diversity of the population. I think I may be the only caucasion in the entire 4 buildings. The population could not be less diverse. It's 99% Indian, Middle Eastern, or some disgusting smelling combination. They all stay here because they can cram 6-8 people into one apartment. It's ridiculous and gross. My first summer is here and the bugs are making their way in. There's no hope, this place is full of holes. It scares me to think how bad it will get. My most dissapointing experience to date came when the tennants above me clogged their toilet, broke their pipes, and flooded my entire appartment with ---- water. Coming through the cieling, light fixtures, electrical outlets, etc. Destroyed our entire cieling, and ruined carpet. The whole ordeal put us out of our place for about 3 days. We returned to find a shoddy patch job on the cieling, and the compensation of 2 discount movie tickets to be used on films that have been in theaters for over a month. Thanks. That's fair. No hotel accomodations. No discounted/prorated rent. Not even a free month of parking. What a joke. It was at that point that I gave up on this place. |
