I've rented a studio for about a year and a half, and have had some problems during my stay. As people have stated, heat and hot water are unreliable, as is the main elevator. I know of three incidents involving non-tenants entering the premises, two of which were handled simply by calling the police and having the passed out individuals taken away. And yes, the carpet in my apt has been terribly dirty since i moved in, as is the kitchen floor, which doesn't seem to come clean. And during my stay I've heard of one incident involving roaches in one of the apartments. I believe that tenant was summarily evicted. And the day after I moved in I was told of how horrible UPI is, and have yet to deal with them moving out. We'll see how much of my deposit I get back.

All that aside,(I know, just that') I have few complaints. My rent is cheap for this neighborhood, especially with on-site parking, and all utilities being paid(yes, electricity too). I'm renting a basic studio which is fine for a single man, especially since I'm in my 20's and don't spend much time hanging out at home. There's a cute little patio on the rooftop which is ideal from spring to fall, although managment has taken to locking it up at night due to roudy partiers above and sleeping tenants on the floor below. Plus 80% of the tenants I've met are great people, which probably comes from the location of the building in proximation of uptown and downtown being nearby.

All that being said, I am not renewing, though would advise it for those willing to compromise. Our current building manager is far better than the previous, especially by leaving memos about upcoming renovations, water shortages, etc.. The night guy has also been extremely helpful and nice whenever I've had an issue. It's a far cry from Home, but it is being improved, and if you're looking for cheap digs in a prime location, and willing to brave a few inconveniences, it's alright..

(Since I moved out...) The good property manager is long gone, sadly fired for "incompitence," which to the owners of the building meant, he actually gave a rat's ass about the tenants. Regarding the deposit, it was $675, 200 of which went to "administration fees," meaning kiss it goodbye; my pet fee hasn't been returned which I'm assuming is also a lost cause at this point. Amazingly, I did recieve $175 despite not cleaning the kitchen, windows or scrubbing the floor which never came clean in the first place. All in all, my above comments remain the best advice.

I have to agree 100%, aside from the complaints about maintenance. I just fix my own problems rather than running to the landlord about every little thing, though..
