The worst apartment building in Minneapolis, DO NOT LIVE HERE

I have had problems with this apartment basically everyday since moving in. The water is out 1-2 times per month, the 'heated' parking lot has a HUGE hole in it (around 30 ft x 30 ft), so hence it is not heated, and due to repairs, I have to park outside on the grass.
I am still being charged to park in the garage ($60/month). I have been told that I am being charged because I can still technically park in the garage, but if any debris falls on my car during the repairs, Calhoun Towers will not be responsible for the damage.
The managment here is like the Gestapo basically, they are very sarcastic and condescendng when you ask to have something repaired. The most common response to a repair request is 'this is not a priority'.
Repairs take approximately 1 day to 21 days to complete, and as you can imagine, the bigger the problem, the longer time it will take to repair it.
The whole building smells terrible, the apartment smells like damp mold, and requires air fresheners to make it remotely tolerable to endure.
I can basically go on for hours and hours about how pitiful this apartment building is. The value of any apartment here is not worth more than paying $400-500 a month.
I am currently being RAPED by the amount of money I have to pay to live here. I was ripped off, please take my advice and do not rent an apartment here.
The only people here that are happy are the ones who have been paying low rents, and living here for years. They also seem to receive preferential treatment from the managment. I am forced to have my rent deducted directly from the bank account while older tenants can pay with a check. This was not in the lease, however, I was basically forced to have to pay rent directly from my bank account, otherwise I would be charged exorbitant extra fees if I paid by check.
The building is old and shabby, with several maintenance problems. The maintenance staff is excellent, the problem lies more with the passive-aggressive managment. Their basic answer to any complaint is "tough luck, we won't do anything about it".
Also, don't be fooled by the 'featured apartment' pictures on the Calhoun Towers website, you apartment will not look like the featured one by any means. I was promised a newly renovated apartment before moving in. After I signed the lease, I received an apartment with HUGE cracks in the walls, leaks occuring in between the walls that keep me up all night, and several bugs residing in the kitchen. I felt like I was in a third world country's apartment complex.
Oh yeah, the bathrooms are dirty and dingy. They have industrial style flushes (with the big metal handle flushes), which make ALOT of noise. When I moved in, I found hair and nails from teh previous tenant in the tub.
You can also hear flushing from the people above and below you very loudly, which will wake you up at night (due to the crappy industrial style toilets).
The apartment is rediculously loud, you will hear noise from the apartments next to you as well as above you. In addition, the noise from the repairs to the parking lot will keep you up all day, the work starts at approximately 6am and continues to 4pm.
I can't stress enough to you not to move into this building. There are FAR superior apartments that fall into the same rental range as these apartments. Only rent here if your rental amaount is $400-500/month, and be prepared to get screwed every which way but loose. Thanks for reading.

I live here at Calhoun Towers. However the person above obviously either doesn't live here or they are nuts. If the place was a bad as they describe, why in the world would they have rented here? Sounds like someone has an ax to grind. I have lived here and have found the place far better than any of the other four apartments I have ever rented. This is easily the best place I ever lived. |

The person that submitted this awful review has been problematic from the day they moved in! They tried to weasel out of the lease the first day. Nothing is ever good enough for them either and they complain about everything! The previous manager bent over backwards to accomodate them; taking photos, emailing and so on to be sure it was just what they were looking for! They received all new carpeting, vinyl, paint, appliances and you name it. They have one of the best views in the city and a lot of extras that were installed by the previous resident. Indeed, they have an axe to grind. I think that they thought that this would be a perfect building!!! Will someone please let me know when you find one closer to it than Calhoun Towers???? It is an awesome place to live; don't let their shabby review fool you!!

I agree with the original poster. S.O., the manager of the place, is not a nice man. The size of his ego is bigger than the size of his waist. This building is horrid. I have problems with my apartment on a daily basis. Everyone working here that was nice has been kicked out by S.O., including the previous manager, who was a gem. This man is always on vacation, and he's never around when you need him. Juist a hint, any 'good' rating you see about this apartment has been written by S.O. I don't know if the original poster has an axe to grind, but he/she is right on they money. The place is a 40 year old dump. The managment stinks, elevators are out for 3-4 months at a time, you have to take the stairs on many days. Fire alarms go off on a daily basis, sometimes at 6am. Do yourself a favor, do not think of moving in here. The views maybe nice, but the managment and the building are crap. Notice how none of the original poster's complaints were addressed by cjjanzen73 (the manager of the building), the posters were just considered 'weasels' because they gave an honest opninion. That's how you will be treated once you sign a lease. |

No matter who is telling the truth, it doesn't matter. It is clear that cjjanzen73 works at this place, and I have to say their response was very unprofessional and they should be embarrassed. Regardless of the situation, you never bash a customer/past resident. If what the original poster said wasn't true, then shame on you for wasting your time writing a response that was clearly just an immature comeback. It just discredits the apartment complex and makes it look like the original poster may have more validity to their review than you claim they do.

I was a caretaker at this building years ago (mid 1990's). It was nice, older but nice. The balconies are great, the windows are beautiful. I loved how they had real doors to the balconies and not those sliding glass things. The laundry rooms got very lint filled because the dryers were not vented right, but I am sure that is long sense fixed. Unless the current manager is a complete jerk, I would bet this is still a fine place to live. Maybe some of the "Lakes Crowd" would find the building to old or otherwise not perfect, but I thought it was nice. The large units, like the three and four bedrooms are amazing!I would recommend that any interested person go and see it for themselves and make up their own minds. I am a apartment manager now, and I know there are many sides to these situations.
