I am not sure what is going on with some of the other people posting about Melrose. I have lived in Melrose for 3 years and most likely will be living there next year.
I have never had any problems with noise, smells, mice, security, staff, or anyone.
After living there for a year I liked it so much that I joined the staff as a Community Ambassador and loved every minute of it. Now I work more behind the scenes but still love being at Melrose.
To address some of these other reviews... I understand that there are some small glitches in any apartment building and some people have had frustrating moments. What surprises me is the level that people are willing to go to slam apartment complexes with huge disses.
First of all, the mouse situation that someone explained turned out not to be a mouse anyway, but a hampster that a resident had illegally in the building. There were no severe issues and maintenance did the best they could to keep the residents happy, including moving them to a different apartment in the meantime if necessary. Lesson here....don't hve hampsters in your apartment when you are told there are no pets besides fish...
Also, the staff in this building is amazing. The security guards are on rounds all the time at night, even if you don't notice them walking around. The noise level is intentionally monitored so that residents who would rather not confront someone about their noise don't have to... instead the CAs and security deal with it.
The parking ramp is very safe and well lit. I have had parking for a long time and have never felt unsafe walking to my car.
The surrounding area is mostly college students, and is fairly safe. However, like any other city there are a few minor events that will take place around the area. The thing that surprises me is that people make comments about the safety in the block or two around Melrose when really all of the problems even close to the University of Minnesota occur on University Ave by all the bars on 15th... which is probably ten blocks from here. So the safety is definately not an issue. I have never felt unsafe walking out of this building, especially since there is usually a ton of other students walking around at night also. Plus, if you feel unsafe in this area ever, there is a service by the U of M that will walk you to wherever you need to go. You just call 624-WALK...easy as that.
About the firetrucks... I can't remember the last time that there were firetrucks here more than one time in a weekend, not to mention more than twice in a month. There really have been very few firetrucks lately at all, especially now that people are starting to understand that when they burn food they shouldn't open the door right away because it sets off the alarms. So that is not even close to being an issue.
The kitchen and cabinets have plenty of space... and if you want a little more, bring an extra cabinet and set it against the wall. We have four people living in my apartment and I have never had any problem finding space for things. I also think my room is the right size. If you organize it right then everything fits just perfect. I even had room to bring a refrigerator and extra photo ladder into my room so I think there is plenty of space.
Having things repaired is a piece of cake as well. All you have to do is go down to the front desk or even call down there and make a work order to have it fixed. Usually within one or two days (except during really chaotic times of the year) the maintenance guys will be there fixing it. I had a problem with my heater one year and I called downstairs to let them know, and they were there replacing it within an hour... it was great! I could never complain about the maintenance staff.
Also, have you seen the great new renevations in the common areas downstairs' They are wonderful. There are new TVs in the game room, a new projector in the theatre as well as leather sofas and new chairs to sit on all over the place. It looks wonderful and there is a lot of people that hang out in those areas. Plus... if you are hungry... you can stop at the Melroast and visit with just about any of the wonderful employees there... as they get you something to eat or drink. Lots of people stop there just to talk with other residents.
If you don't know a lot of people and want to meet some fun people and do some great things, the staff is always putting on free barbecues and free pizza nights, as well as cheap tickets to go to twins games and comedy clubs, and even a cruise in the spring. There is a lot of really fun stuff always going on that you can get involved in.
Again, I realize that some people have had moments of frustration, as do people in every apartment complex, but Melrose does a great job of being flexible for people and trying to get things just right. Also, its a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and a great staff that can help you with just about anything!
I would definately recommend Melrose to anyone interested in housing. And if you are looking to get involved even more and have an awesome time working where you live.. check into being a CA or leasing staff, or Melroast staff. They have a ton of fun!

Wow nice try with the hamster cover up. Unless someone lost 3 hamsters and they looked exactly like mice and all happened to be in my apartment, then I think that's a big load of crap!

What? There are CAs?!? I had no idea! I haven't seen or so much as heard of a CA, and I've been living here for almost a year now.
And honestly, I don't really like the new renovations. Way too much color. Can you see the carpet in the picture? Bleh!
