I have lived at the Grand Marc for two years, and I'm writing this because I'm concerned that people will get the wrong impression of the place from the reviews that are posted here. While some reviews are positive, there are a ton of negative ones that I just don't understand.
For one, yes. It's expensive. But it's not all that expensive for what you get. There's a washer and dryer in each unit which is ridiculously convenient. All of your utilities are paid. Its clean, bright, secure, but still in an urban location right next to the university. As far as the office staff, I've always been impressed with their professionalism. I've known people in the building who have complained about "issues" they've had with the staff. But when I hear what their "issues" are, it's always that the person I know wants a rule of some kind broken for them, or that they complain about something in their lease. That always confuses me, since they are challenging the very lease terms that they agreed to.
Anyway, I think it would be a shame to give people the wrong impression about the place. Granted, its not for everyone. The street noise can be an issue depending on where you're placed. After all, it is the city. And it's not cheap, but I know a ton of people who live here who aren't rich by ANY stretch of the imagination (myself included) but who use student loans to finance living in a really decent and convenient place for a few years.

I appreciate the candor and geniune concern for the newbies, there's always gonna be problem people who don't get their way then want to dump on the place who wouldn't put up with their crap! I agree they are reviewing their own behavior more than anything else. It will be how you make it. Unless there's major partying out of control with managers part of or not stopping. Or lots of broken rules, disrespect to others space, and property or violence. Then I would be concerned but less any of that I think the tenants will make it what it is by their own behavior. Am I right? Is it safe? Clean? Controlled? A place to study and stay while trying to get thru school? who could ask for more!? Am I right or am I not??

It's not clean. It's blocks away from a very bad neighborhood (featured in Time magazine, actually for being so crime-ridden.) It is full of sloppy, noisy people who just leave trash in the hallways. It's overpriced, and never updated. My key stopped working twice. They also need to update the swipe system, to something else.
