I lived on the second floor with three of my friends from the fall of 2004 to mid-summer of 2005.
We initially chose Marcy Park Apartments because it seemed secure, was located near campus, and was in better condition than the majority of the other apartments/houses that my friends and I had looked at. The price was high but still affordable and because we were able to sleep 2 to a room, we figured that we could save money.
Marcy Park Apartments hold similar characteristics to the dorms located on the U of M campus. The building was (is) of very low quality overall. The walls are thin (thus making it almost impossible to sleep without the use of earplugs on or around the weekends), the carpet is cheap (it wears away very easily- which in turn makes it very easy for the apartment owners to keep your deposit at the end of your lease), the windows were drafty, the walls are made with a paint that shows EACH and EVERY scuff, and the appliances are of low-quality (our fridge was broken more times than I could count AND our dishwasher was leaky). You can tell that the owners did everything in their power to cut cost while building the apartment complex.
Honestly, you can do much better for the amount of money that you will be spending if you just take the time to look around. My roommates and I are currently living just 2 blocks from the lakes in uptown Minneapolis in a three bedroom apartment -ALL UTILITIES INCLUDED- for $1250. Sure it's not on campus- but it is only a 10 minute bus ride and this apartment has CHARACTER much unlike stark, blank, boring Marcy Park Apartments.
I also think that it's worth noting the fact that a car was stolen (and never returned) from the underground parking garage AND there was a suicide in the park across the street from the complex at the time that I lived there. I realize that the management couldn't have necessarily stopped either of these things, but I do feel that prospective tenants should be aware of these things.
This doesn't change the fact that I do still desperately miss my spot in the heated, underground parking garage.
I think that Marcy Park would be decent for those without a discerning eye. It would be a decent place to live for those who would rather not sleep at night. It would be a good place to live if you don't mind throwing your money away on something completely mediocre. Thankfully my roommates and I are a bit more selective than that.
