Quite adequate

I am really quite happy with my apartment. Carpets, flooring, etc. in the apartment are clean and well-maintained. The kitchen is very small but just adequate for me. Anytime I have had an issue, it has been fixed right away. The full-time apartment manager, Larry, is very helpful and friendly. There is another one that sometimes shows up on weekends, but I rarely see her and am not sure if there is a regular schedule for her or not. The common areas are reasonably well-maintained, and there does seem to be effort put into making regular improvements such as refinishing the doors.
Garage parking is extra, but it's worth it for me (I didn't include that in the rent price). It seems like a number of residents do not own cars, which is good because I'm not sure there would be enough parking otherwise. The cement parking blocks in the garage were removed for no apparent reason, and I have found it necessary to back into my space to make it easier to get out, so the blocks were actually helpful. It is kind of a hassle to get parking permits anytime someone wants to come over, but at least there is a way to do it. There is easy access to light rail and several bus lines right there, plus it's about a ten minute walk to the U of M campus, so the location is really quite good. You can be downtown in ten minutes (if that) by car, probably about fifteen minutes by light rail or bus.
The hallways and common areas do smell bad to me due to what I assume is the cooking that goes on in some of the apartments. It doesn't seem to seep into the apartment, though. I did have a lot of trouble getting used to the traffic noise on 94. I have had no problems with the air conditioning, but the heat in the winter is oppressive -- I did not run my heat once last winter, and I usually had to open the windows, which made the traffic noise worse. The pool is too cold for my tastes even when it's 95 degrees or so outside, probably because it's completely surrounded by the building and gets little direct sun. There is some remodeling of the courtyard happening, which makes it look a lot nicer. I'm hoping some of the plastic outdoor furniture gets replaced next year, as it's not in very good condition.
According to my lease, pets are not allowed, but maybe it's possible to work something out, as I've seen cats during our far-too-frequent "fire drills." At least the fire station is only a block away.
Overall, this has been a good apartment for me. I would recommend it.
