I imagine both the hotel and the neighborhood have changed over the years, but back in the late 70's-early 80's, the Oak Grove was where the Guthrie Theatre dumped the actors who performed there. We called it the Oak Grave, where careers were buried. My husband and I, and our then 11-year-old son spent a miserable winter there. Being from New York, I wasn't used to the 40-below temperatures, and we were stuck in that depressing hotel. The place was dark and grungy with a really creepy manager who wasn't thrilled about all the complaints from the actors. The only one who actually liked it there was our lab mix, Muttsy, who loved diving into the snowdrifts in the lot near the hotel, and running in the snow. I would have taken my son and left, but we had sublet our apartment for the winter. On top of it, the play my husband was in was a disaster, so it was a really long and depressing four months. But at least we didn't have to pay rent for that dump, since the theatre paid it.

I love living here; have been here for over 5 years. The hotel is great and so is Oak Grove Street. It's truly a neighborhood and people greet each other on the street and watch out for each other. It may not have been as nice 30 years ago, but who cares? It's a little late to be complaining about it now, don't you think???

Since New York itself is a total dump and its inhabitants are cockroaches I suppose you are uniquely qualified to jugde a garbage heap. However, did you ever stop to think your husband's dismal failure to perform and the fact that you are saddled with an 11 year old brat has colored your view on the building and the neighborhood?
