Stay Away! Bug Infestations!

I moved in June '07 and enjoyed living here until my apartment became infested with bed bugs. My neighbor brought them into the building and management didn't take proper precautions to keep the original infestation from spreading. Bed bugs feed on your blood at night and can easily move from one apartment to the next if adjacent apartments aren't treated along with the original infestation. All of my furniture had to be thrown out due to bed bugs. I couldn't keep any furniture unless I sealed it in platic for 18-20 months(bed bugs can survive this long without a blood meal). I moved out and didn't want to risk bringing bugs with me to a new place. Office staff said it was my problem and they would not reimburse me for my losses. The staff was rude and unhelpful. I know that this problem has spread to other apartments in the building. I wouldn't recommend this apartment building to anyone. Dealing with this situation has been extremely difficult. Do yourself a favor and stay away from these apartments.

Hi, I'm moving to Rivergate soon and your post worries me. What floor did you live on?
From: Anonymous Date: 09/02/2008
I am a current resident and they are proactively treating all the apartments right now.

(From the poster)-I'm sorry to hear about your troubles on the 3rd floor. I lived closer to the top floor with bed bugs that spread from next door. I was able to get out of my lease. I was very thorough in cleaning/sanitizing anything that I didn't throw out and the infestation didn't follow me to my new place. I know how tough it is. Hang in there.

I am a current resident of the floor in question (the 3rd) and I can tell you that indeed they are NOT being proactive about the situation and continue to be very rude and unhelpful in response to inquires about the infestation. It has gotten to the point where I am NO LONGER ABLE TO LIVE THERE. And yet, being told that if I don't pay rent for an apartment that is completely uninhabitable I will be evicted. Funny how that works, huh?

My sister lives on the 13th floor and is now having trouble with a bedbug infestation. The managers have not been helpful and in fact, are wanting her to pay $1300 to get rid of the bedbugs. She is bipolar plus low income and cannot afford this nor can she afford to throw out all her furniture and start over. This is a BIG problem and needs to be taken care of by the management of Rivergate Apartments. They are not helpful and have been very rude. People need to report them to the County Health Department.

I have a friend that is on the 13th floor who has bed bugs from someone on the floor above them. We talked with Homeline which is a tenants rights place and they said that the management if responsible for getting the bed bugs cleaned up in the entire building and continuing to keep the building exterminated so they don't keep coming back. The fact that management is trying to make the tenants pay for this problem is totally against the leases in this building. They told us that people should contact them or go on their website and fill out a Request for Repair form that makes management take care of this problem. If it is not taken care of, there is recourse on the tenants part regarding management. I also talked to the inspector that handles the building for the City of Minneapolis and she is coming out to inspect the apartment in question for my friend but if any of you need yours inspected you should call 311 and get her to yours too. I hope this helps. Bed Bugs are a HUGE problem and never go away in a multiple dwelling housing area unless they are exterminated throughout the entire building and the exterminating is continued on a regular basis.

Go to the Minneapolis housing services and talk with them. You can easily get out from your lease. Here is the address of the office. 250 South 4ht street - Room 510 Minneapolis, MN 55415 - 1372. This office is in Minneapolis housing Services Building. Go to the 5th floor, Once you get out of the elevator just right in front you will see the office (Room 510). Dear friend i have gone through all those problems. I know the real pain of the situation. Just wanted to help you by providing the information. All the best. B.T.W This office is just 10 min walk from Rivergate appartments and connected to skyway.

I have a move in date next month to the 2nd floor, is this problem improving at all?
From: Anonymous Date: 01/18/2009
I'm not convinced the problem is improving in this building. When I notified the office of the problems in my building, they did not seem the least bit surprised and even made a comment about how this had been a common complaint as of late. A lot of apartments, particularly those in Downtown Minneapolis, have bed bug problems, however, I was told that this outbreak started with 1 individual person and spread to a bunch of different places throughout the building. You would think that they would be able to control the spread of bed bugs if the origin of the problem was just in one unit. In addition, every resident in the building just received two notices this week under our door reminding us of the rules around pest control, particularly bed bugs, and reiterated that all costs associated with pest control in the building would be those of the residents. I have been dealing with this issue for less then 2 weeks now and am already out over $300 due to this problem. In trying to get out of my lease, even though they basically told me that this had been a problem for some time now in the building, I was not able to get out of my lease because this infestation could have been my fault. When I told them manager that I hadn't traveled in over a year and that I don't have people stay at my place, nor do I ever stay at other people's apartments, so it would have been very difficult for me to bring them in, I was then told that I could have picked up bed bugs in a cab (which was one of the stupidest things I have ever heard and wasn't worth arguing with her that I don't take cabs either). I would save yourself the trouble and try to get out of your lease now if you can. If not, you should try and insist that they treat your apartment before you move in, so hopefully this won't be an issue for you, or anyone else, anymore.

I'm a reporter with the Twin Cities Daily Planet (www.tcdailyplanet.net). I'm working on an article on the increase in bed bugs in the Twin Cities area. I'd looking to interview local residents about their problems with bed bugs. You can reach me at: madeleine [dot] baran [at] gmail.com Thanks! Madeleine Baran
