Scary and over-heated

Pros:
-Close to downtown.
-Restaurants/bars/coffeeshops within short walk.
-Clean when I moved in.
-Management was easy to deal with.
-Buildings are old brownstones, so lots of character.
-I never heard my neighbors (maybe I didn't have any')

Cons:
-No decent grocery store nearby.
-Parking was AWFUL. I paid $35 per month for a parking spot which was supposed to be "a couple blocks from the building" and was actually 6 full blocks. Street parking is almost as competitive as Dinkytown and cars get towed regularly for parking violations.
-Laundry machines take tokens not quarters, and you have to buy them from the office which isn't always open when you need to do laundry (this may have changed since I lived there).
-Apartment was tiny and the layout was terrible. Windows were tiny and faced a brick wall (only a small window at the end of my long skinny kitchen got direct sunlight).
-Apartment building was dimly lit on the inside and outside. Secured entry was not very secure (door propping...). Back alley entrance was CREEPY.
-Neighborhood was scary when I lived there (2003-04). I've heard they've cleaned it up a bit since. Be prepared - visit the neighborhood at 10pm on a Friday before you sign a lease.
-In the winter I had the heat in my apartment turned completely off and my apartment was still average 85 degrees and steamy unless I opened windows (I think all really old buildings are like this). uWDgQKY3Vkv8FKIsB8Ax

My experiences were very similar. Not only did the laundry machines take tokens, we actually had to pass around a petition to finally get a dryer that worked in our laundry room.

The neighborhood has cleaned up a lot. Much nicer.

the neighborhood is still very dangerous and the heat winter and summer is intolerable
