Pretty Good

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2009
My first time on my own and in an apartment, all in all, went pretty well.
I was there for two years and I may stay there longer.
Pros: 1.When I signed up, they included all my utilities except electricity, so not paying heat in MN is a definite plus.
2. Pretty good size apartment rooms with everything I could think of. Stove, fridge, fireplace, dishwasher, garbage disposal, washer / dryer.
3. Maintenance. I've been hearing horror stories from others in other apartment buildings, but for the most part things were okay here. The washer was put together wrong so it went out a couple times and the cover fell off the front of the thing electrically shocking me once. The garbage disposal stopped running a couple times and once the toilet overflowed while nobody was home so there was standing water in the bathroom and it got soaked into the hall carpet. BUT - for each of these problems I called the maintenance guys and everything was fixed within 24 hours. Except the carpet cleaning, which I think took two days, but I'm fairly certain the group managing the building before I moved in didn't clean the carpet at all before I moved in.
4. Pretty quiet. I see a police car every now and then in front of the building, but as far as I know, no stabbings or murders or stuff like that here. Also, I've never had a problem with noise. Not once. I'm surprised that nobody has called on me, because I usually have my games turned pretty loud and I play my guitar in there often, but not super loud. Once I think I heard a dog, and the person upstairs has a cat that wanders the deck and meows for 10 minutes every night. But other than that, its all good.
5. My neighbors were awesome. borrowed me tools and kitchen things. Very quiet. And donated food to the whole building. Great guys.
6. Massive closets. Friggin huge.
7. Place looks okay inside and out. I've seen better but this place is pretty clean mostly brick construction and doesn't smell too bad as I've noticed many apartments do...
8. At one time a furnace or something went out, so I got a letter saying that hot water might not work for a while, but only one time have I had problems getting hot water and it wasn't while that thing was broken.
Cons:
1. The complex was sold 3 days after I moved in causing a little hassle, and the (past) owners didn't give me everything I needed, probably since they were in a hurry to leave. Didn't give me a key to the front door and the garage opener wasn't programmed! I was locked out my first day! Had a very nice neighbor who borrowed me her key though and I quickly found the correct code from somebody else for the garage. Also, since I was the last one to move in under the old administration, I wasn't properly logged and someone came in to show my apartment to prospective clients in the morning. Only happened once, and I had clothes on, so looking back, not that bad.
2. Sliding glass door had a lock that was broken. Looking back, I should have called about it, but I had a pipe to put in the door frame that probably was safer than trusting any little lock(I was on the first floor).
3. Package receiving, or lack of. UPS deliveries are frequently missed because when they get there, everyone in the office goes to lunch so they have to come back 2 or 3 times to deliver your package.
4. In the winter, my apartment was freezing. I came home from work one night and my thermometer read 55 degrees F. It was cold. This, I think is my largest complaint here. I just used a lot of blankets all the time.
5. This one is pretty personal, but I'm pretty sure I was allergic to something in there, my eyes got all puffy and then swollen and then the swollen lumps got little bumps on them. This happened a few times, and though there was no permanent damage, it was uncomfortable. This happened about 2 or 3 times a month and gradually went away. Maybe I just got used to it.
6. the A/C is in the living room for 1 bedrooms, and the bedroom is around a corner, so sleeping in the bedroom was not happening in the summer. I moved the bed out to the living room and kept it there, under the A/C unit. Which actually I liked better, used the bedroom for kind of an office area. Still sucks it was hot in there and I couldn't really do anything about it, but I didn't have to spend much time in there after I moved my bed.
Not sure if this is a pro or con, but we got a letter that said something about people breaking into cars in the garage, I was never affected. Although I did walk in on a group of guys with what looked like a tool box in the garage once. and when i walked in they all ran and hid. Could have been burglars, may not have been.
Oh, also it's a secure building but like I said the office isn't always open to pick up the packages, so once, FedEx left flowers I ordered for my GF in front of my door and they were quickly stolen. Although the apartment guys couldn't do a thing about it, I called Proflowers and they had them replaced for free in 24 hours! So go proflowers I guess.
Rent went up 20 bucks after the new company took over but not again after that. Although the new company did change the rules so as not to allow dogs anymore.
Lastly, while I haven't moved out yet, I'm actually kind of dreading it. I've never left an apartment complex before and I've heard stories about how the management make up things so they don't have to give you your deposit back. I'll wait and see I guess.
