University Village was a wonderful experience for me. I should make it clear that I live in the private side, not the side that is run by th U of M which is under different management. The office staff in this side is absolutely wonderful. The people that work behind the desk even know my first and last name, and will always stop to chat with you. They all live in the building, so they take great pride in ensuring the quality of life for their residents. They even hand out fliers when it comes time for renewal so that you don't get stuck paying extra for not giving notice. When it comes to crime, Minneapolis is a big city with it's fair share of idiots, and the management makes any incident IMMEDIATELY aware to their residents by posting fliers in the common areas and slipping them under the doors of every single apartment. This type of notice is always given within one day, if not the same day, as the incident occurred. The building is secure, and no one who doesn't live there gets let in unless a resident does it. Also, when they say that utilities are unlimited and included in the rent cost, they mean it. I was never once asked to pay for something that was not explicitly stated in the lease or parking contract. Parking runs around $85 a month for a spot in a secured, heated garage with a guaranteed space. Not cheap, but a good price relative to the area and the fact that it's indoors. Well worth it if you drive often. The units are very well maintained with laundry in each unit at no extra cost to the residents. The appliances are nice and new, and maintenance is quick to respond to just about anything. Our dryer broke, and they were there within 20 minutes of the phone call. If they are going to perform any kind of routine maintenance, they always give close to a week's notice of the dates and times that they will be entering your apartment. The whole building is in great shape, and I have only had to call maintenance one time. The apartments are spacious and well-lit, and you can't really hear the neighbors unless they are being ridiculous. Overall, if you have had a problem/been charged for something extra/been reprimanded by management...etc, it is probably your own fault. If you know how to behave like an adult (or at least close to one), you will love it here. If I hadn't finished school and gotten a job so far from Minneapolis, I would be here next year for sure.
