Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2007

I signed a year contract with Lowertown Commons since I was going to be going to school nearby. At the last minute, I had to back out of school, and told the management this. They said the renter cannot get out the contract and try and sublet. They said they would try and rent my apartment but they had a few others first they needed to rent. That was September 2006. (My least started in August 2006.) They knew that I had to pay on another mortgage plus pay their rent. They have not, to my knowledge, tried to rent my apartment, except for one time in July 2007. I have sent them pleading e-mails about the financial burden this was causing me, and that I did not spend one single night at the apartment. It was to no avail. Consequently, I have had to pay $899 per month from August 2006 through July 2007. This is one of the most unfair business practices I have ever seen. I realize that I signed a contract, but I received no services since I didn't even spend one night at the apartment. I know that I should have paid at least two months rent since I didn't notify them until September and perhaps another month or so to rent the apartment, but "not" one year's worth totalling $10,788. This is so absurd. Regardless of how the apartment itself is, renter beware if you think there might be any issue where you need to leave before your one year contract expires. Management has no conscience whatsoever. Just pay your rent and shut up.

So how do you rate all those features without ever staying in the place at all? Also, what do you think a lease is?
