Smoke gets in your eyes

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2007
We've lived in this building for 6 months: the first three were fine and I thought the management was very responsive to our comments and requests for service. Then the apartment above us was taken by a noisy, chain-smoking young couple. Within weeks our bedroom reeked of cigarette smoke, even after running an air purifier 24/7. After a couple of months, my eyes were red and dry and I was waking up in the mornings with a sore throat and stuffy sinuses. Complaints to the management did nothing, and in meantime our neighbors also began throwing parties on weeknights. Because there is so little insulation between the floor and ceiling, we can hear not only footsteps but conversation, the television, and even the neighbors' phone messages. On top of this, we can not control the heat in our apartment, so it is either blast-furnace hot or freezing cold when we were forced to shut the heat off altogether. (The windows are drafty and we actually could see the blinds waving as winter winds came in through the cracks.) We are trying to break the lease on account of the cigarette smoke, but in the meantime, I would not recommend these units to anyone with respiratory problems or who just wants peace and quiet.
