Hell On Earth (Literally!!!)

I have been here at Gatehouse for almost a year. When I first got here things were fine, then the weather changed and things got bad. . . Shootings, breakins, loud noise, SWAT teams everywhere, and countless other things. This place is the worst place to live as far as I'm concerned. I agree with a lot of other people who have lived here and I honestly would never suggest this place, not even to my worst enemy. The maintenence people are never reliable and nothing gets done right. We did have our door reinforced but trying to get a furnace fixed was like pulling teeth. Needless to say it was a cold winter for me and my boyfriend. We had to get space heaters to heat the apartment, which fried a bunch of outlets on the walls. Internet is completely unreliable. The entire complex shares one (1) connection on a certain company and if too many people are on the internet at the same time, guess what, you lose your connection. And theres ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you can get another internet carrier at this complex. The Owners say that they won't let another company run lines for internet. So if you value your online time, do it at 2am when no one else is on. The parking lot is a disaster!!! Every time it rains we get a lake for a parking lot and when it snows they never plow it away. Construction at 8am is crazy, especially for my boyfriend who works nights and has to sleep during the day. The apartments are set up horribly and I often wonder what kind of person could ever design, let alone build a place like this. You often feel like your in a jail because of how this place is set up. The pools never cleaned and theres always trash on the grounds because the staff are too lazy to clean up the place. Course now they have "Valet Trash Service" for the lazy people who don't want to take their trash down themselves. You pay $30 a month to have someone else take your trash down for you. Nice gesture but people need to learn to be more responsible. Also if you want to have covered parking, you pan an extra $20 a month for a parking spot. Shouldn't those things be free if you have to deal with so many stupid people' You never get a quiet moment at this place. Theres always a fight or some other disturbance going on here. If you like to party and see a fight then come to Gatehouse. One of the nice things about Gatehouse is that if you turn your rent in on time you get put in a drawing to get $100 off the next months rent, water is free so you can take as many showers a day or however long you want to take one or you can do all the dishes you little heart desires without paying an arm and a leg for water. All in all, Gatehouse sucks and should be quaranteened due to "too many stupid people in one area." Don't come here if you value your sanity and safety.

I am the manager here at Gatehouse, and upon seeing this review that was posted, my guess is that this is a resident that is being evicted and lashing out. The above comment is the reason why it is important to not base views of a property off of these reviews. Below I will go through the above posting and explain, or correct, the numerous so called complaints.
1. "things got bad...shootings, breakins, loud noise, SWAT teams.." - This was a result of residents that moved in prior to our management takeover, or from resident's guests. This all happened in January, and we responded immediately, and worked closely with the Columbia Police Dept. in assisting them with enough information and assistance which led to numerous arrests, and evictions. We take residents safety very seriously, and after the storm cleared, we received numerous compliments, thank you cards and appreciation for our expediant response to cleaning up this property.
2. "The maintenance people are never reliable and nothing gets done right. We did have our door reinforced but trying to get a furnace fixed was like pulling teeth... We had to get space heaters to heat the apartment, which fried a bunch of outlets on the walls." This in itself is a contradicting statement for the fact that the door reinforcement that is stated to be completed was done by onsite maintenance and according to the post, I am assuming was done right. However, the part in regards to the furnace, we subcontract out all HVAC issues to a certified HVAC contractor. If the furnace took a while to be fixed, it is probably b/c a part was on back order. As for having space heaters that "fried a bunch of outlets on the walls", I have not heard a complaint where we have had to go in and replace a bunch of outlets, so I would have to say this is either incorrect, or not reported due to not wanting us to enter the apartment and finding something the resident doesn't want us to see.
3. "Internet is completely unreliable... The owners say that they won't let another company run lines for internet." Mediacom offers internet for our property, which the office utilizes, and we hardly have any issues or complaints in regards to the service. However, I do know that phone companies offer internet as well, but I have witnessed, from personal experiance, that dial up is the slowest and most unreliable form of internet these days. My suggestion to this resident is to switch to Mediacom. As for the comment that "The Owners say they won't let another company run lines for internet." that is completely false. First of all the owners did not make that comment, and second of all, I inform residents that if they want to utilize another service they are free to use anyone of their choice, as long as they do not damage the property in the process. However, cable and phone companies tend to be very territorial, and they are the one's that will not run lines where another service provider exists.
4. "The parking lot is a disaster!!!" There is one location in our parking lot that is an issue, but we have already been talking to contractors, gathering bids, and looking into having the drainage issue fixed this summer. However, the contractors will probably want to start at 8am in the morning and work through the day, so we may get another negative post from this resident for keeping her boyfriend awake while he sleeps during the day. As for the snow, every time it snowed over 2 inches, we had the parking lot plowed.
5. "The apartments are set up horribly..." Every resident viewed the apartment prior to moving in, so the layout is no surprise. I think the layout is somewhat standard for an apartment, just another off the wall complaint from a disgruntled resident.
6. "The pools never cleaned and theres always trash on the grounds because the staff are too lazy to clean up the place. Course now they have 'Valet Trash Service' for the lazy people who don't want to take their trash down themselves." Another contradicting comment. If our staff was too lazy to pick up trash, why would we offer to go to residents apartments to take their trash to the dumpster for them. It is because their are residents, and their guests, that are too lazy to pick up their own trash. As we see trash on property, we pick it up. However, if someone goes right behind us and throws down another piece of trash, than we are just running circles. As for the pools, we clean the pools every day, and if something is noticed during working hours, we continue to pick that up as well.
7. "Also, if you want to have covered parking, you pay an extra $20 a month for a parking spot. Shouldn't those things be free if you have to deal with so many stupid people." All carport spaces are $10 per month. It looks like we will be handing out carport spaces to every resident around the individual making this post if we do what the individual commented.
8. "Theres always a fight or some other disturbance going on here." There is a lot of individuals that live in such a close area, so occasional disturbances are part of the norm. However, upon receiving complaints, we investigate and do what we can to rid the problem from our community as quickly as possible to give everyone the best possible environment we can for our residents.
9. "All in all, Gatehouse sucks and should be quaranteened due to "too many stupid people in one are." If the individual making this post would like to step forward, I will gladly allow them to move out of our community so we can help lower the number of "stupid people in one area". If someone is going to make a post the entire world can see, at least make sure you have all your facts straight before putting yourself out there.

When I lived at Gatehouse Apartments, my experience was more like the frustrated review than Mr. Schultz's acerbic rebuttal. Those days are thankfully behind me but I have never lived in such a terrible apartment or complex -anywhere- either prior to or since. Things were broken, couldn't get them fixed. The parking lot flooded. They were taking bids at the time... I guess it was expensive if they are once again taking bids. The laundry was a joke. The neighbors were loud and the walls paper thin. There was crime and lowlife activity. Residents littered and left junk everywhere. Parties and constant noise - loud people and kids and let's not forget the boom boom beat. And really - the internet connection was horribly unreliable - Mediacom said there were too many users for the node. It's funny that should come up. I had no problems with the parking other than wading through the water upon occasion and people hanging out in their cars playing loud music. There are many units - people are rude. We were not able to view our actual apartment before moving in (tenant still in unit) but were told it was "just like" the model. Oh sure - same floor plan, old appliances, stained carpet and walls, holes in doors and walls. That is why, even now, I feel moved to make comment - it was just that shockingly bad. Now, ownership and management changes but the structure could not have changed- it is a poor structure. Perhaps the current management has not given up or gone over to the dark side. If you are quiet and a good tenant and can afford to live elsewhere, you would be better off to do so.
