Been here over six months now, so I think it's time for a review.
Honestly, it's a great value for the rent you pay. The apartments look nice, feel homey, and I feel safe here. Apartments are well-insulated, and my utility bills were fairly low even in the middle of winter. There was one incident with someone singing outside my bedroom window, but no other disturbances, and the noise level is quite low, with even the closeness to the airport not bothering me much. I like my neighbors. Although a lot of people park on the side of the road here, there always seems to be enough space in the lots--my girlfriend and I have parked behind our apartment since we moved here, and there's a third space next to us that is never taken, great for when we have guests.
There are some annoyingly persistent maintenance issues (the bathroom sink/tub faucet handles are crappy and break frequently, sliding closet doors come off their treads, and the garbage disposal breaks every other week), but thankfully they're prompt about getting them fixed. The one emergency maintenance issue we've had (plumbing backing up due to the aforementioned crappy faucet handle flying off and going down the flushing toilet--seriously) was dealt with very promptly and professionally.
There are two more irritating issues--first that the complex is provided cable/internet by Charter, and if you want someone else, you're SOL. It's $120 per month for their cable/internet/phone package (and that's just the starting rate!), which is absolutely ridiculous, so I've had to do without cable and a landline phone since I've been here. No satellite dishes are allowed, so there's no way you can work around this. Also, the laundry facilities are really expensive--$1.50 per load in the washer or dryer.
Also, and this is very important, I can't help but feel that I wouldn't have moved to Hazelwood in the first place had I explored the St. Louis area further. It's not a bad area, just boring. It's all residential/industrial in the immediate area, and for shopping I'm always going south to Bridgeton or north to Florissant. There's nothing interesting within walking distance.
So, I'd recommend Parkwood Place Apartments as long as you're absolutely sure Hazelwood is where you want to live, and don't mind paying too much for other services in exchange for the lower rent.
