I moved in over 4 years ago before the neighborhood went bad. It was one of the nicer apartment complexes of the area. There were some minor issues I had to deal with over the years -- some maintenance issues (nothing out of the ordinary, except three summers in a row my A/C died, and they had to patch it together to make it work -- loosen the purse strings and buy a new one!). I used to recommend living here, even as recent as summer 2007, but I do not anymore.

As far as noise went, I could definitely hear my neighbors all the time! If they shut their kitchen doors, I would hear it through my kitchen. And the vents from the Washer/Dryer area were always very smoky in smell (like cigarettes from the next door people). There was also a season where one neighbor consistently had parties after midnight and would blare their music until like 4am. Yes, we called both the apartment complex and the cops, but once the cops left, they cranked up the tunes once again. It was not a pleasant few weeks until it seemed to be resolved. And if a neighbor shut their door anywhere (1st-3rd floors in our 12 apt. breezeways), the whole apartment shook for a moment.

Now, allow me to deal with the safety issues that having only increased since I moved in: in the first year, there was a small string of car thefts and break-ins, but nothing out of the ordinary for that neighborhood. And honestly, I felt safe walking to my car at night if necessary. After a new management company purchased the complex a couple years ago, things seemed to just get worse. People started moving in that were quite shady. We had people near us that had like six people in the apartment living there and more coming and going at all hours; they were later forcibly evicted. There is a registered sex offender living with someone in the complex, but because he's not on the lease, they cannot do anything about it (though he is registered with the state at that apartment). There has also been some cases of people smoking out (pot, etc.) and drinking on the stairs and breezeways -- makes it kind of creepy to pass them to get to your apartment! And this past summer there was a double homicide at the apartment complex next to us, which just goes to show you how the neighborhood's gone from just okay to pretty bad.

Now, the good things: I know a lot of people have complained about how many notices we get, but I like them. We stay informed about the events around the complex (like they're having car ports installed now) or the pest control guy is coming next week or a fun community event at the pool clubhouse. And I don't mind having to get a pool pass each summer because it does enforce some modicum of security over who's using the pool. I do like their fitness area; it is a nice large room with relatively new equipment and usually pretty empty. And most of the neighbors are really nice and friendly. I personally have never had a problem with anyone on staff, and they've always been very nice and professional to me.

I did make the decision to move due to work, but I think I would've moved because of the safety issue anyway. It's most certainly not the worst apartments in that area, but it really does need some work to make me want to recommend it to people again. However, I did have some great times and memories there. It's really a toss-up, I think.
