Lived in Old Westport for 3 years - perfect for college age males

I lived in the Old Westport apartment buildings for 3 years.
First let me say it was the perfect place to be as a college student. I'm actually surprised they don't fix the place up a little and advertise more to students. It is within walking distance of a 24 hour grocery store (Sun Fresh less than 1 block!), the Tivoli independent movie theater, and then of course ALL the bars in Westport!! It is also convenient getting downtown from Old Westport via Southwest Trafficway -- great location. There are also a few restaurants close by fast food and other options. The apartment was also comparatively MUCH cheaper than those newer buildings across the street. Great location, wining, dining, and entertainment within walking distance at reduced cost!
With that said I will address the negatives:
The area is not very "safe". And it isn't very "pretty". The place is well built as far as I could tell and we never really had any problems with our hot water, heat, or air conditioning. My roommate's car was randomly keyed (I would guess by some of the bored kids who lived there) and my car was broken into and my radio stolen. I think there was a serial killer arrested one night while we were living there also -- random I know. One time I found a homeless man staying in the laundry room which he was able to get into because the door was broken, he could have taken anything. The first time we looked at our apartment there were piles of cat litter left behind with urine and feces on the floor and some random junk. The landlord was slow to fix things (such as burnt out light in hallway outside leading to our door) but at least he cleaned the place before we moved in. The pool, as another poster said, is horrible I don't think I even dipped my foot in once in the 3 years I was there.
If you can look past the negatives nothing really bad ever happened to me while I was living here but I tried keeping mostly to myself and my apartment was alone on a top-floor somewhat isolated where I didn't ever really have to interact with anyone. Old Westport isn't the kind of place I would recommend to girls staying alone or anyone looking for a "family-friendly"/community type place, but if you're a single college age male looking for a place Old Westport could be perfect for you!
