A Learning Experience

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008

I moved into Park Meadows in late December after accepting a position in Kansas City working with a local media affiliate. It was my first apartment out of college and I did not have much time to prep or shop around for an apartment I accepted the job early December with a start date two days before I moved in. I searched frantically with a price point of roughly $500 for rent, other expenses could be calculated later.

I signed a lease and moved in, my apartment had a few problems with it, my ceiling fan was hanging by the electrical wiring in the dining room, it was never a major concern since I didn't use it however I put in a work order and it took about 6 months for maintenance to get around to fix it, it was a minor concern on their list.

I also had an apartment with no heat to begin with, the thermostat had faulty wiring and was not triggering the heater and to make matters even better I had no hot water for the first week as well, these problems were resolved rather quickly though, a matter of days.

Over the course of my lease however the complex slowly moved downhill, it was Section 8 when I moved in however in regards to the community I hardly ever saw anyone in my complex building at all, I believe when I moved in there were only 4 other tenants but I believe now the complex is filled but I wouldn't know since I never saw anyone. The community wasn't a major concern for me I worked constantly so the apartment was just a place to sleep and eat. However I had speculation that while I lived there, two packages of mine were stolen off my door, they never arrived to my knowledge but the carrier stated they were delivered.

Now frankly I didn't know the Kansas City area that well coming into it and I had little time to research it but this was the information I was provided in regards to the area:

1. Stay off Troost
2. Stay off Prospect
3. Stay above 80th St

This applied for the South Kansas City area and the Downtown Metro, with this information I thought I had a decent place but I was wrong.

As you've probably already read, the complex had 3 shootings in 2008, during one occurence no one could park in the inner complexes but I could park in the outer ones and walk...the police are so smart...the night of this occurence police found the gun, clip and remaining bullets near my building. The other shooting that I was in the complex during the time was located in the complex up the street not more than 800 feet away. The man who was in his late 40s was shot by his teenage roommate and possible accomplice, who was wanting money. The man was shot at night and left for dead however he still lived until the following morning, one of the kids returned to find him still alive and proceeded to then shoot and kill him this time. Now please re-read that last sentence, the man was shot at night, no one heard or called police, until the second shooting.

Needless to say the community was not safe, management gave no notification to residents in the complex about the incidents. After the first two shootings a few months later management was changed and the complex still did not go anywhere. It has been a few months since any major incidents but I am confident with the residents in the area that it is still not a safe place to live. Maybe to the oblivious but not to me. Stay away!!
