I have lived in Roanoke West apartments for about 8 months now, and all in all it has been a pretty good experience. The management and maintenance staff seem to be nice people, although I have not had to call maintenance to my apartment more than once. They are old buildings though, so I may have just got lucky on not having to call more than once. One bad experience I have had is the first month i lived here, my roommate and i put our rent checks in the same envelope and dropped it in the rent "drop box". A few days later, we got a letter saying that they only got my roommates check and that we were going to be charged all sorts of late fees. I spoke to Lisa and told her i sent my check with his and someone must have misplaced it. She waived the late fees and just let me give her a check right then. I now go to the office and write out the check in front of the management and give it to them in person, and i have never had a problem since. The neighborhood is safe. I am a 19 year old, reasonably attractive, Caucasian female and when i walk my dog late at night, i have never encountered a problem. Most of the tenants in my building are students or young professionals, and not to come off as racist, but all of them are Caucasians as well. Overall, i would recommend this place to my friends. It is 2 blocks from the plaza, and 6 from the center of Westport.

This review strikes me as fair; I've lived at Roanoke West since Dec. 2002 (almost five years) and have found management, especially current management (Lisa C. and Lindy T.) exceptionally cooperative and professional; I'm glad the misunderstanding or accident referred to in this review was able to be immediately straightened out. As for maintenance, I still generally marvel at its swiftness. There have been a few delays but then there are only three or four on-site workers for over three hundred units in buildings that are well-maintained but that do date from 1941. I have had at least four or five valid emergencies late at night or on a weekend, and in each case help arrived very fast and all was well within minutes.
The racial mix is a complex question, as any sociologist can attest. Many factors enter into a changing racial composition in any multi-resident community. In my own building there has consistently been a multi-racial presence. Non-US students were more prevalent when I first moved in; perhaps they will be again one day. I have never seen the slightest evidence of racism in living here.
The neighborhood is not quite as safe as in 2002, but that, unfortunately, is not surprising. Crime on the Plaza as well as in Westport has risen. Still, this (West Plaza) neighborhood still most likely ranks as the second-safest in our Metro area. Personal crime is very, very rare. The neighborhood is far quieter than many superficially comparable ones in KC. Excessive noise is not looked on kindly in the complex, either, for many students and post-grad students live and study here.
As in my initial review, I remain enthusiastic about Roanoke West and would recommend it to any mature being, of any age capable of leasing a dwelling.
