When I first moved to The Lakes they used to be a contender. It was hard to beat for the money. However, in the last year and a half or so, the service has really gone down hill in a big way. The staff seems to have gotten extremely lazy and unwilling to honor their end of the lease agreement.
Break ins and vandalism. Cars are being broken into on a regular basis around here lately. The only thing management did to try to stop it was hire a patrol truck to drive around the place every few hours. That lasted about a month or so and I haven't seen him since. Besides the break ins, the laundry rooms are constantly being vandalized. It got so bad that they completely removed the vending machines in them. One time I had a load of laundry in and I came back a few minutes later to find that somebody had went into the laundry room to find my wet clothes, and everyone else's thrown all over the dirty floor and mixed together. I reported it to management. They did nothing. I guess giving the residents keys to the laundry room and keeping it locked would have been too much to ask.
Maintenance. Well, overall it's not too bad. The maintenance men themselves seem to be good workers. Getting the management to mobilize them and make things happen is sometimes a different story according to my neighbors though. The laundry machines are constantly jacked up and are quite proficient at ripping people off. Don't expect a refund if they take your money. The policy is that the office will supposedly contact the company that owns the machines and get your money back. Then they'll contact you. They used to be good about making that happen 3 years ago. Now, if you have this problem they'll tell you they'll contact you but they never do. I guess it disrupts their myspace time or something. Oh, and the fantastic little gym' Very little equipment and it's usually broke. Basically, you pay a 25 dollar deposit fee for a key to access equipment you can't use.
Ripoffs. When you sign a year lease they offer you an option usually of a free microwave or a carpet cleaning. The problem is that, often times, they never honor this. Myself and several other tenants I've talked to have been had on this one. I contacted them 5 times over the course of a year inquiring about my free carpet cleaning. The first 3 times were in person and I got the story that they were still scheduling it. The last 2 times I sent a note when they were asking me to sign a new lease agreement. They never responded. Apparently they have no intention of honoring their commitment. Just something to try to entice you to sign on the dotted line.
Annoyances. When I first moved here, anytime the exterminators or maintenance needed to come in they'd give you at least a few days notice. That's pretty nice and it also gives you time to make sure that everything is in order and no guests are stopping by. If you have to work a shift it's also good because it sucks being woke up by somebody trudging into your apartment while you're trying to sleep. Last time the exterminator was supposed to come I was temporarily on night shift. Less than 24 hours before he was supposed to be there I get a note on the door. Now, I have all sorts of crap to do and no time to put all of my stuff up so the exterminators can do their thing on such short notice. Those things are set up weeks in advance so there was absolutely no reason for such short notice. Just pure laziness on the part of the people in the office. On top of that, I think the quality of renters is going down. Theft seems to be up and there's a lot more cars with booming stereos driving around the parking lots. I think things are getting a little bit ghetto around here. Rather than offering good service and quality of life they are now relying on being more lenient about the quality of tenants they let in and allowing things such as big, loud, barking dogs.
I've noticed more empty parking spaces around here than ever and more empty apartments. I think my dissatisfaction as of late has become pretty common amongst the tenants here. Instead of signing a year lease this time, I opted to pay extra and go month to month until I find a new place. I've had enough. Time to look for someplace with a more honest and motivated management staff that values their tenants.
Bottom line, it used to be a great place to live but that's no longer the case. Stay away if you're smart. Better options are out there.
P.S. Did I mention the huge fire here recently' Apparently no one's smoke detectors worked either. That's comforting. Management is really on top of things around here huh' Thank God nobody died.

I live here too and have had my car broken into, and have issues with the smoke detector in our apartment. Didn't know that no one's smoke detector worked in the fire. Now I know why I'm moving.
