Don't expect much from Hickory Trace

I wouldn't recommend living here, unless you don't mind loud neighbors and a possible cockroach infestation now and then.
For $485 a month, which is reasonable, you get close access to I-70, I-270 and I-170, grocery stores and more payday loan companies than you can shake a stick at. The parking is open lot, meaning your car is exposed at all times (no covered parking). However, there are usually places to park close to your building, so you don't have to walk far. Typically, I can park right next to my building and walk right into my apartment. The grounds themselves are fairly well-kept, except in the fall the leaves weren't raked. Leaves built up by the door and blew into the building itself, which isn't a real problem, except there are leaves everywhere.
The general safety of the apartments is okay; there is a lot of outdoor lighting, some of which shines right into my window. Entry to the apartment requires use of a key to the building, then a key to the apartment. This works except when tenants either forget their key or break their keys off in the building door; instead of just calling maintenance to let them in, they just tear the locks off the door. This has happened twice in my building; the first time it happened, it took maintenance nearly a month to replace the latch. The second time it happened, I didn't even bother complaining, because by the time it gets fixed, I'll probably have moved out.
The overall construction of the apartments is okay. The one bedroom apartments have a big walk-in closet and a dresser-drawer/shelves set into the wall, which is space-saving. The living room is good-sized, but the kitchen is tiny and offers almost no counter space. Cupboard space is adequate, however.
When it comes to insulation, both sound and heat-wise, Hickory Trace could be a lot better. A lot. The bedroom is significantly colder than the rest of the apartment, since it's on a corner. The walls are also painfully thin when it comes to neighbors. Then again, my neighbors love to blast their music at top volume; I think they are laboring under the impression that the building is a dance club and that everyone wants to hear what they're listening to. The good news, though, is that Hickory Trace has a 10 pm quiet hour, and if you complain to the staff about loud neighbors, you get a fairly quick response, since breaking quiet hour is a lease violation.
Overall, this isn't a terrible place to live, but I wouldn't stay longer than a year. A lot of the problems stem from the buildings being very old, which can be harder to heat and don't have the same insulation that newer apartments do. Just don't expect a whole lot living here.
