Great Place in a Convenient Part of Town

I lived here for a little over a year. When I first arrived, the apartment manager was not responsive and many things were in disrepair. Of course, shortly before I moved out, a new manager took over and instantly made changes for the better. Things such as cleaning the halls, maintaining the common areas and performing upkeep and overdue repairs were noticeable overnight. It's a good place to live as there is a young crowd, a lot of options to meet people and a good social atmosphere. From the awesome rooftop deck, to the pool, to the various social events, if you're young and looking for a fun place to live, this fits the bill. The central location is convenient to the Forest Park (literally about 500 feet away), the CWE, Downtown, the Loop, Soulard and Clayton. All are minutes away. Additionally, Metrolink is about a 10 minute walk. Finally, WashU and SLU are both very close in proximity.
As usual, security/safety could be an issue. However, it is an issue anywhere in the CWE and has nothing to do with the apartment management. It's the CWE, you're going to have to look over your shoulder if you live there. Portland Place is directly east of the West End City Apartments and provides a nice buffer.
In short, this is a nice place to live, especially for those in the younger crowd.

When did the previous property manager leave? I had a TERRIBLE experience with the previous manager, so I am so happy to hear it has shaped up with the new manager. I moved out in March of 2008, but the property manager went in before my lease was up and cleaned out my apartment, painted and replaced the carpet, but the remaining personal belongings I had left were taken and not replaced. I demanded my things to be returned, or I be paid a fee to replace them and I refused to pay for the painting, and threatened civil court action, but the property manager "happened" to come across these mysterious miscellaneous invoices that would have charged me $800 to paint, and $500 to replace the carpet, and $275 to replace the linoleum...all for a 500 sqft STUDIO!! The previous property manager threatened to make me pay all those ridiculously padded invoices and I was so tired of arguing over this for months that I dropped the whole thing. I kept all my correspondence considered reporting to the BBB, but just got so tired of it. I am glad there wasn't anything "priceless" or irreplaceable left in the apartment, but I was shocked at the PISS POOR management that existed when I lived there. I am so glad things are great for you.

Nothing is perfect, but it's finally started to shape up. As a rule of thumb, many of these places are only as good as the person who is running it. Likewise, it was bad when I moved in and good when I moved out. I hope it continues to improve - the apartments are in a neat part of town.
