think and consider

As with any apartment that you decide to move into, you should think and consider about where you plan to live--especially when you sign a lease and you're legally binded. However, in the case of Avalon, be very careful. It's not a matter of the property, becuase it looks nice. It's not a matter of bills, because they were fairly reasonable. It really boils down to how situations are handled. Unfortunately if you're a minority, that last statement goes tenfold. I know what you are probably saying--here we go again with the race card. Let me explain my situation: we move in, everything is okay. A month later, one of the roommates just leaves without notice and breaks the lease. I go to management, and they tell me that I'm responsible for paying the other roommates share of the rent. I ask them for forms or any information to take it to small claims court, management blows me off and refuse to talk about the situation anymore after that. Once I actually, found someone to take up the lease, management wouldn't allow that person to stay, stating "they're not on the lease." Also, the site security seems to have a problem with minorities. He's always threatened to arrest anyone in our apartment complex due to noise because "he can hear the TV from outside the door." Mind you there could be a party going on at another apartment across from us--but he's at our door. Also, with the basketball court, he constantly harassed any guest that any minority brought. He kept saying that it was two visitors per guest. We obliged and called our games off. It's not just the basketball court--it was everything. If it were majority ------- American, you could bet he'd break it up in a span of ten minutes. Finally, we got smart and actually invited other ------- American tenants that lived with us for a full-court game. Once he came out to break it up, we accommodated by having two "guests" per tenant. I guess he realized that he couldn't break it up, then stating that the policy was "two guests per household." Since three of the five residents were all from the same apartment, we naturally had to call the game off. I've invited Caucasian friends to play basketball full-court and--to no surprise--had any problems. I'm sure that there are otheres to have the same experience with the same cop. To top it off, I received a call from a collection agency that there were still payments due--over a year later! To make a long story short, if these are the kinds of issues that you want to deal with after a long day of school/work, be my guest. I can almost guarantee you that it's gotten worse since moving out. 3mPoZ6gGN6wTPgNi4L2C

Sounds like you are complaining because the rules you agreed to when you signed a lease are being enforced. Don't you hate then people don't give you a break because you are a minority? I mean really, all minorities should not be forced to abide by rules they agreed to. Basically, your complaining about absolutely nothing and you seem like a person who wants the rules bended. And when that doesn't happen it is because you are a minority. Don't play your music loud, don't bring more guests than allowed, and don't slander Avalon apartments because you want to blame anything that doesn't happen your way on race.

I agree with the previous article, ------ are treated differently by that on-site officer, I was coming from work one night, going to my mail box and he stopped me asking me what was my name, what was I doing out so late, did I live there, etc. I'm 100% sure he would not have asked a caucasian male the same line of questioning. There is no onsite curfew, the weight-room is open 24-hours, it's located beside the mail stop. I can't believe I'm paying for this guy for security. I'm getting out when my lease is up for sure. To the previous commenter on the article, yes the renter IS responsible for the rent when someone bails out, but the apartment managers could have been more helpful in his situation, seeing that he honestly wanted to help make their situation better. He was willing to do whatever it took, even to the extent of legal action to get his rent paid and they blew him off and threw the blame at him. He knew the blame was on him and that was why he wanted to do something about it. It's not about bending rules for minorities, it's about being there for your tenants when they are reaching out for you. This was a tenant who was concerned, did not know what to do, and when he found someone else to replace the other roommate, they were not eager to approve it. Sounds like they just wanted him out. They have a policy that we are not supposed to have trash outside our doors, but whites do it all the time. I've complained about this to no avail and frankly if it's your policy, I shouldn't have to complain. They have a policy that we are not supposed to grill on our balconies, whites do it all the time, they even live in the same building as one of the managers. I'm certain if I were to grill, I'd be kicked off the premises for breaking my lease. Double standard. The only difference is race. I'm leaving this place when my lease is up.
